Possibly not, but they are on our doorstep and they destroy lives just as surely as a bomb or a bullet.

I was with you until you excluded Mormons from cult status.

Dangerous cult.

They've been making an effort in the last few years to expand more and recruit in Oz.

I don't know a whole bunch about mormans. I could be wrong...

Drugs can fuck you up but who doesn't experiment. But the day one of my kids goes to a Scientology church is the day I lock them in the cellar and go burn the place to the ground.

Do you mean because they're so obviously exploitative? One has to question whether anyone at the highest levels could possibly believe in the snake oil they sell.

But aside from their desire to separate people from their money and fill their heads with utter bullshit .. is there another reason for calling them evil?

Sounds like part of their appeal is like that of Mormonism. There is opportunity for advancement, a chance to become more. They're both either reading to much sci-fi/fantasy or too little.

Scientology (and Mormonism, I guess) are the reasons for my atheism. When I was in that doubting phase, I remember thinking something like "wow, these beliefs are retarded!" And that thought was the final nail in the coffin, so to speak. I realized, in a sort of epiphany, that my own beliefs were equally ridiculous.

So, not really an "experience" with Scientology, per se. But yeah, they made me an atheist Big Grin

No, not at all. All religions are exploitative. Watch that film I posted, it explains a lot. It's what they do to keep their "members from people who try to help them. They're a little like the mob. Once you're in, leaving is not so easy.

For eg. There was, on the documentary an interview with the mother of a woman who had been" disconnected " from her family. The church, who obviously knew the interview was happening, had the girl contact her mum a few hours later and say she would kill herself if the interview was aired.

That's the sort of people they are.

Okay. But I do mainly because I consider "cult" a pejorative term. I don't disagree that scientology is bad and little more than a modern con. But mormonism is a 19th century con job. Islam is a 6th century con job. Xtianity is a 2-3d century con job. I merely say they are they same shit in a different bag as all other religions.

There are cons and cons. The tools they use are different.
