How can a Christian reject part of the Bible and still call themselves a Christian?

Right. And as long as you don't try to use that belief to buttress an argument, it's all good.

Except if the argument is about that belief, or challenging it. Some opponents will try and force on you a claim of knowledge never made, saying after it exactly what you just said.

For example....

My deism is based more on instinct than logical arguments that I could use to make a claim. I've written before that it's a compromise between my skeptical mind and sentimental proverbial heart. This is why some have noted that I "talk like an atheist" when making arguments; it's coming from the same kind of skepticism that most atheists have. The sentiments I mention are driven by the natural universe which is more wondrous than anything religion has ever created (I concur with Richard Dawkins' points about "petty gods" and "little gods") and the potential of the human mind and civilization.

... and then every other anti belief argument you've ever made.

To believe in God doesn't mean you will automatically understand everything. The girl clearly doesn't know that homosexuality isn't condemned in the bible and so couldn't tell you that. Her basic answer was correct and in line with her belief. If she had agreed with you then there would indeed be dissonance.

I hardly think the only reason to hang out on a forums is for the opportunity to persuade others. Sometimes it is just a good way to clearer what you yourself think. I for one don't start off knowing exactly what I think on every issue. Besides I don't want responsibility for anyone else's belief.

I had a conversation with Christian girl yesterday and it randomly led to the subject of homosexuality.
She believes that it is perfectly acceptable to be a homosexual because you should be able to love anyone you want.
I asked her how she could say that and call herself a Christian. She became iritated. I pointed out that her Bible clearly states that it is an abomination. She finally said " I don't care what it says" and ended the conversation. The stress caused by the cognitive dissonance was pretty high.
I find Christians do this a lot. They reject what they don't like in the Bible.

Pop christians do this a lot. The rest are referred to as fundies.
