How can someone decieve themselves into believing God speaks to them? It seems far-fetched for a sane person to believe this is true unless there's something more to it.

Because regardless if someone is sane or not, they are still working with an imperfect brain. We're pattern seeking primates that tend to assign importance and agency to insignificant things.
