Is Ford omniscient or omnipotent? Could Ford possibly know you were going to do that, or do anything to stop you once you decided to?

It's much more interesting to interpret the bible esoterically. For example:
The 42 lads might represent one having many fantastically elaborate egos in place/use. The mocking may be the egos repressing normal, sane brain functioning and presence consciousness. The two female bears could represent the hemispheres of the brain uniting to combat the alien egos (42 mockers) within. "God" in this case would represent the "Higher Mind" of mankind in a spiritual sense. This model keeps the story in tact from a "Biblical" context - whatever that is.

Elisha was the Emperor's (aka God) emissary on official business. When the kids insulted him they were insulting the Emperor. Elisha sicced his guards on them and the guards killed the offensive kids.

But as an aside, there were bears in that area in ancient times. The writer probably used bears as a metaphor for how ferociously the guards attacked the kids.

Elisha was pretty progressive, keeping a pair of female guards in that time. At least, I choose to interpret it that way because it sounds kind of cool that he had two female guards that had no compunctions about grabbing a sword and opening up a massive cask of whup-ass on a bunch of snotty kids. Extra points if they were dressed in the skimpy "armor" that female characters get to wear in MMORPGs.
