RE: Proof of the soul?

Several points:
1. Speaking in tongues.
To start with, Mark 16:17 is not original to the Bible. It is a later addition. The oldest known copies of the NT do not contain any references to speaking in new tongues.
But as others have said, they are not speaking in a language. Linguists have examined samples of what is being uttered, and the same syllables will have different usages for different people.
Finally, atheist ex Pastor, Dan Barker can 'speak in tongues' on demand. He is doing the same thing as when he was a believer.
2. loosing 21 grams at death proves the soul exists.
This is ridiculous on many levels.
First, the claim itself is not supported by the 100 year old experiment. MacDougal only tested 6 people, 2 of which he tossed out the results himself. So, we're only talking about 4 people in the sample size.
Second, there are other explanations for the loss of weight. Many times, right at death, a human's body temp will go up as much as 10 degrees. Evaporation of sweat could easily explain the loss of weight.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

From all the people who have actually died and come back to tell us what it was like...wait, no such person exists. They're called near death experiences for a reason.
And guess what ikind of NDE's Hindus report.

And obviously you did not use that handy WikiHow guide I linked you to that explained how to evaluate whether a source was reliable.
Why would soooo many people lie, they're not all making money off of this.
People can honestly believe things that aren't true. People can have experiences that aren't actually happening outside their own heads. Arguably, none of our experiences are happening outsdie of our own heads, because all of our experiences are interpretations generated by our brains. No lying necessary.

I've spoken in tongues during church, too. I still can, if I want. It's just babbling.

It's the same as the fans of famous bands and singers becoming hysterical at the mere sight of their heroes.
That was easy.
So there happens to be like two dozen crazy people in my town of like 11,000?
I'm sure it's more than that, but crazy is not what's going on with glossalalia. It has more to do with social pressure.

It's not a mistake in that sense. They've been told that if they open their mouths and let whatever comes to them fall out, it will be God speaking through them. The mistake was believing the person who told them that.

JL1, what you're doing is dishonest, and the fact that you haven't come clean yet is very telling of your fear of reprimand. Even though, every day you continue on without telling us who you really are, you forfeit that much more patience the staff here will have with you.
No rush though. Keep purposefully lying to everyone here. People love dishonesty, right?
This is all untrue.
Care to provide evidence of that? We might not believe you otherwise...

We rely on what people say all the time. But we proportion our belief according to the available prior information. If you say you tied your shoe yourself this morning, most of us will take you at your word...but NOT because testimony is so reliable. Because of our prior knowledge that most people who can type can tie their own shoes, we know it is not an extraordinary claim, so we require very little evidence to accept it. If you say you don't need shoes because you levitate everywhere you go, it will take more than your word to get us to believe you.
The first thing we normally do with claims is evaluate them for 'ordinariness'. If we're theists, we waive that requirement as long as it's just for our own religion.

More importantly, NDE's don't just pop up in people who are near death either; people who only feel like they're about to die, when medically they're totally safe, have reported NDE's too. This shit is at least partially psychosomatic, in some cases.

What, you never read one of enrico's posts?
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

You know, the more I read JL1's posts the more convinced I am that he's a Poe.
I know there are some delusional, sheltered sheeple out there, but this guy... JL1 either admit that you're a Poe and get the fuck out or grow the fuck up and step out of mummy and daddy's shadow long enough to think for your fucking self.
(Canadian cents, because American money is counter-productive to my message; "In god we trust", hah, what drivel.)
