For me, getting my degrees was a fulfilment of a deep urge, a work of passion. I needed to learn the science, I needed to learn the maths, and every second I spent on it I was doing exactly what I wanted to do with my life.
Disclaimer: I live in a country where university education is completely free of charge all the way, and when you go to uni, you start with the subjects of your specialization immediately.

im at a two year local college. One of my professors constantly urged us to learn chinese and japanese because thats were he felt the jobs were at. He also encouraged us to visit the occupy wall street movement. He was a nice old man who hate what the edu system had become and complained about the us economy

Depends on what you want. If you don't want or need to go to college it could be a waste of your time and money. If you want or feel the need to go to college it's worth it. If you're not sure what you want, there's no age limit on college, so you can do it in the future if need be. My education goes as far as a few GCSEs, and I'm doing fine right now. I have a pretty good job, with good opportunities for promotion if I want it. College would have been a waste of everything for me. I'd probably be on the dole right now if I'd gone to college and uni instead of working since I was 16.

I have a Master in Literature and Language and went to University with some really intelligent people. We're talking people with a Master degree in Classical History or Logic Mathematics.
Some of those guys worked in Tesco up until a few years back.

Most all my relatives have masters, PHDs, and law degrees. I'm one of the least educated with only a Bachelors.
Higher education has paid off for all of us.
Everything I needed to know about life I learned on Dagobah.

Well it depends on what your major is, though I get annoyed by people who say that getting a degree will guarantee them a job. It doesn't, will it increase your chances of getting job? Yes but again, depends on what you want to do. In these times, something like art won't guarantee you a job unless you're really creative and draw superbly.

Also hopefully your whole life won't be about your job. That's a depressing thought.

I'm in IT. I've had IT managers that had degrees from everything from Architecture to Range Science. But not a single one of them would have held that job without a bachelor degree.

The costs of college are sky rocketing at least here in the states. Even so, the payoff for an education continues to be staggering over not having a one .. unless you have some innovative idea or exceptional skill which you can market. The bottom here is so low for those without a degree that it still seems worthwhile to get the education.
Of course, beyond the degree there are satisfactions connected to an education that deserve consideration even if they don't prepare you for a vocation. Hard times indeed when every decision must be translated to dollars and cents.
