Ivy's Closet- A video for my family
I need your opinion before I send it to my parents and sister. It's long. It's 13 minutes and somethin seconds. I guess if at least one person has time to watch it and give me an opinion, it would be great. I have been participating in LGBTQ rights activism and am getting ready to dive into it deeper. Before I do that, however, I want people to stop thinking I'm an ally. It's funny that they still think that, since I have been pretty vocal about my ideas, my tattoo on my back is pretty darn clear, and I wouldn't deny the truth if they asked.

The thing is that my parents came to visit last weekend and commented on a rally I will be attending. They made a few comments that I'm kind of hoping means they don't already know, because if they do and said that anyway... it would break my heart. My family was fundie for as long as I can remember. My brother and I are the only atheists. I have talked some sense into my parents and they are no longer theists, but do consider themselves deists. My sister is still a fundie. She is the one that I am worried about, because I might end up losing all contact with her.

The thing is that I'm truly passionate about defending lgbtq rights and standing up for equality. This has become a very important part of my identity. I have come to the determination that nobody, not even my family, will stop me from speaking up. I have witnessed enough discrimination, that if I stayed silent, I'd be ashamed of myself.

Keep in mind that I made this video for my parents and sister, so some things seem personal, like when I speak about growing up and memories. I was trying to help them remember I'm no stranger.

This video goes over the fact that I'm atheist and bisexual.

I can second that.
I was so surprised to hear your voice and accent, however, not at all what I imagined (very lovely though!) Big Grin
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Ivy, I think your video is great. It has all of the things it needs. That could not have been easy. You should be proud of yourself. And although you didn't cry, I got a little weepy thinking about a little girl praying for forgiveness about being attracted to another human being, that's so sad. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. It disgusts me that children are taught that kind of shame, and you survived that.

I truly hope your family receives this well. You seem like a wonderful person, and you deserve that.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Congrats on getting all this off your chest. Your demeanor is such that they should hear how much you want them to be good with who you are. They should be proud of your guts in leveling with them. That said, I hope your parents are half as open minded as you are.

You know best, but I would say yes.

I think the video was good. The sound quality was a little poor, but I don't know how much you care about that.
The thing I don't understand is the talk about not being an 'ally'. What do you mean by that?
An ally of gay people?
Also -- why a video? Can't you talk to them?

The part about standing in front of the congregation and apologizing for having sex. What an awful, degrading situation. Nobody should have to go through something like that.
It seems gay/bi people in the US have to endure a lot. It makes me sad.

I'm grateful I live in one of the most liberal countries in the world. Too bad for gay/bi histrionic people though... They come out screaming 'I'm gay, I'm gay, I'm gay!!! Look at me I'm gay!!!' And 99.9% of everyone is going 'So? *yawn*'. Almost nobody cares one way or the other.
Not saying you are histrionic, though.

You look cute in the video, BTW. I like the bangs.
