Anti-psychotics can make a huge difference although it wasn't until I started Latuda that I really noticed a change in my depression. Risperidone and Geodon didn't have much effect on depression for me. Just out of curiosity if you feel like sharing what antipsychotic are you on?

It's a chemical found naturally in the body and is used in treatment of depression among other things. In the US it's OTC, while in some countries it requires a prescription.

Genes mostly, but environmental factors usually triggers the first bout of depression. Some need meds to get over it, other manage with lifestyle changes. However, if you suffer regularly from bouts of depression, your brain structure changes and it gets increasingly harder to feel happy about anything. Fortunately it's not permanent, you can with medication and extensive therapy and exercise get a better response from your serotonin and dopamine receptors, and if successful, you'll be able to rebuild the neural pathways that were lost. But that of course means that it's a lot harder to fully recover from chronic depression, and thus the odds for relapse is a lot higher.

They help with emotions, for instance the manic part of bipolar can be treated with antipsychotics. People with depression are sometimes put on antipsychotics because, for whatever reason, they can enhance the effects of antidepressants (SOME antipsychotics do this - you probably have seen those commercials for Abilify). In any case though, another side effect of antipsychotics, and this is the big influence on depression for me, is a flat affect. Very few emotions. This includes the feelings of depression. Zoloft keeps my emotions from flattening as well as preventing any depression from occurring in the process. I should also note - perphenazine does not make me tired at all.

Well people here have given you great answers. I struggle with depression and it cycles. But with medication I am gaining motivation, spirit and hope back. Now to tackle those pesky habits that need to die.
