You have only been told this, you have no proof that it actually happened.

Hey! It's written in a book, not once, not twice, not thrice, not four times, but FIVE!!
And people have consistently, throughout the ages put themselves in harm's way because of their conviction that it's true...
It can't be a lie, now can it?!
hock:
Actually, some of the accounts on that book already detail people putting themselves in harm's way because of that belief.... maybe we can cut a few books from the actual original narrative...?

The spirit of that teaching is that there are some among this [age] (this current developmental stage of human-kind) who would not taste death (experience a spiritual sleep) prior to Christ (spiritual realms) returning in glory (providing an individual with a spiritual awakening). The bible is an esoteric text, and in the wrong hands it can produce all kinds of error and destruction (as history has proven well). Most theists will explain a difference in interpretation by first pointing out that everyone else has it wrong, then providing the "correct" interpretation. Occasionally they will provide some out-of-context verses from parts of the Bible to help bolster the point, or (as you did here) simply offer the alternative with no additional support.
Once we assume that a particular text is metaphor or allegory, the possible interpretations and explanations become almost infinite and can support just about any approach. As others pointed out, this does not speak well of the idea that it was inspired by a being of immeasurable intellect and wisdom.

Not intentionally, perhaps.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I believe that the Truth can set you free. I love all you atheists on this board and have been praying for you daily. Call me a nut or to take a flying leap, however, I am motivated my the love of the Lord.
You're doing a piss-poor job of carrying out your mission. You're simply reinforcing our perception of the shallowness of christianity. Jesus would not be impressed.

Hey Rev, could you go back to page 32 of this thread and answer the questions I asked you at the bottom of that page? I'd really appreciate an answer, and more importantly, if you're honest in answering them, then the answers you'll be forced to give might make you think, too.
It'll never happen. Rev is your typical self-proclaimed sheep. He will never see it because he simply does not want to. I'm convinced that even if you could build a time machine, go back 2000 years, prove Jesus was a worthless hippie and the crucifixion never happened that his kind would only scoff and say it was the work of demons. You cannot teach those who refuse to be taught.

If it's any consolation, your posts are still probably ten times more rational than our resident theists (except JacobSmooth because he gets it). Secondly, it is a distinct possibility that this guy is exactly what you propose: a Poe. The unfortunate truth is that we will probably never know that for certain, so the best anyone can do with this guy Rev is to continue to ask him to back up his claims.
Asking a theist to back up their claims is like asking a child to prove Santa with NORAD.

The point of the exercise in asking them is to have them come to exactly that realization.

From the guy who rejects evolution despite overwhelming evidence, and supports Noah's Ark and the great flood despite any evidence, all this shows is how meaningless and subjective a Christian's understanding of "Truth" is.
Innumerable intellectuals, professionals, and even scientists embrace intelligent design. Over 80% of Americans believe there is a God. Name me one US President that was an atheist? Sir, you are in the minority.

Are you saying Christians are valueless?
If Christians were on the whole valueless, then they would have on the whole also been harmless. That is clearly not the case. On the whole, Christians seem to me to have been mightily harmful, the are of negative value, to humanity's endeavor to prolong its own survive by building up and exploiting understanding of how the universe of which it is a part really works.
So no, Christians are not valueless, meaning harmless. They are much worse. They are of negative value and highly harmful.
How many hospitals, charitable organizations, homeless shelters, etc. based on the mission of Christ? How many by atheists?
Hitler himself claimed to be a Christian, was he really? Jesus predicted many would claim to know Him but would say to them, "I never knew you..."

Catches on quick, doesn't he?
I wouldn't say that Christians are valueless. I've known many decent Christians.
I will say that CHristianity, generally, is valueless.
Christ see great value in His followers.
