The virtualisation route sounds far better. Bugger the 700mb PITA.

mmm spose. Still 700mb minimum of carp to dig out of the registry afterwards. It's a nice idea. Any way to get people trying linux is fine by me.

With all due respect, are you using your head to store dirty rags and unfounded claims? Please read up on what the windows registry is, why 700 megs as part of an ubuntu install will never be added to a registry and how the wubi works.

ok bad wording. It's 700mb of carp that writes to the registry and the windows boot loader. I'm simply comparing with the live CD method which seems far less painful to me.
Virtualisation is good if all you want to do is test the system and don't care about the performance, or install it on top of another system to use semi-frequently.
Live CDs are good for testing out whether the distro is compatible with your computer, and also for checking pre-install things. I personally only use Live CDs for installing systems completely onto the HDD, or for fixing OS faults (like if Windows refuses to boot and I want files, or the bootloader needs reconfiguring). Usually virtualisation is the method I use for running Linux these days. I love VM's, use them all the time
 I'm always changing my network around, dumping windows servers for Linux and Solaris and vice verse, trying to get a really heterogeneous environment running smoothly. Currently have the following running: Windows Server 2008 : Domain Controller, Active Directory, ICS, Proxy SLES 11 : DHCP, DNS Solaris : File and Print, Firewall SME Server (behind DMZ): LAMP Windows 7 : Client Ubuntu 9.10 : Client It's a hella confusing setup, took a long time to get get everything cooperating  - My SME Server was the PDC for a while with 2008 being SDC/AD.
