Rant - how fucked up is the system?

She works full time. Her oldest is disabled, and the job market here is simply awful.

It's not as if they aren't trying.

They were barely making ends meet when the child support payments stopped without notice.

Yeah, her idiot deadbeat ex didn't even bother giving the heads up that he lost his job. She called her case worker a few weeks after missing a payment and was told he requested an adjustment hearing to get the amount lowered.

It's fucked up - a way out of this jam will be found (and I'll do what I can do to help), but the unavailability of assistance is terrible. The number of homeless around here has increased a couple hundred percent over the last ten years.

So I have a friend who, along with her two kids, is at risk of becoming homeless. Her deadbeat ex lost his job, and so has no paycheck to garnish for the child support he would otherwise not pay. The state will eventually garnish his unemployment insurance - to the tune of about a hundred bucks a month.

Meanwhile, my friend hasn't been receiving child support at all for a few months, and has fallen behind on the rent, and the landlord is threatening eviction.

A call to the local PHA (Public Housing Authority) was in order. Sure, they can put her on a waiting list for temporary assistance - when the list reopens in three years.

The republibertarianeo-conazi view of "heaven" right there.

The system is designed bureaucratically in such a way that those who are truly in need never receive the help they desperately need while those who are not in need can leach the system and its benefits almost immediately. It honestly is messed up.

Well, at least the crisis has been averted, no thanks to the programs ostensibly intended to help. Those that don't have friends or family with the resources to help aren't likely to be as fortunate.
