Overrated games
I just feel like bitching about certain games I think are overrated. Feel free to share your own thoughts and rant about games you also think are over-hyped.

Sooo...

Dishonored - I've never understood the hype with this game. The main story is incredibly short, the characters are boring as fuck and I couldn't care less about the story because of the poor characters. The setting is ok, people go on like it's some steampunk wonderland. It's really not, they could of done a lot more to get you involved in the world. The gameplay is the only redeeming feature, but it's so fucking pointless. Sure it's fun, but the upgrades and character progression don't mean shit when the game is piss easy to complete even on the hardest setting. Yeah you get to 'choose how you play'. Guns blazing or sneaking. Wow that's a new and original concept. How about we give you some ridiculously overpowered special abilities like freezing time or seeing enemies through walls to really make the enemies you encounter as pointless as a broken pencil.

There's no real want for me to pick up this game after the first few plays. The story just isn't gripping enough. You're thrown into this completely bland environment and introduced to a kid you see for about 40 seconds and expected to care about rescuing this kid with some cliche over-arching government conspiracy on top of it all. Boring.

To be fair, it's not a bad game despite all my negativity, but considering the fact it's supposedly GOTY material, it's the most over-hyped game I can think of.


Uncharted - Another one with a fairly bland storyline and characters. To be fair, the characters in this game are a lot better than Dishonored, but they're still pretty one dimensional. The story (at least in the first two, which are all I've played) is pretty basic. The twist in the first game was admittedly pretty cool, and it did get me going for about 20-30 minutes while I played through it, but shortly after you're back to the fairly standard combat and bland enemies. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay in Uncharted is smooth and fun, but it's pretty darn safe. It doesn't push any boundaries or get you overly excited. Visually they're nice enough games, and that is one of the better aspects. But people go on like Uncharted is the best series on playstation. I don't really understand it myself.

The formula is your bog standard treasure hunter adventure game. It does pretty well at giving you that, but when I see it scored consistently with 10/10 from critics, I have to wonder what the fuck I missed. 8/10 is about as much as I think any of the uncharted games deserve. Not because they suck too much to be 10's, but because they just don't do enough to be 10's.

I guess Uncharted is like the Indiana Jones of video gaming. Good games/films, but they're not exactly the 'definitive' experience.


I could probably rant about a few more but I'll just list them for now (doubt many people will read this all anyway).
Call of Duty, Bioshock, Skyrim, LittleBigPlanet, Batman: Arkham series, MGS4

None of these games are bad, I feel I should point that out. Just not as good as the kinds of scores they seem to get by 'critics'.

True, call of duty being the obvious one. It's like the devs in the whole first-person shooter genre have made some kind of pact that they'll keep standards low and aim their games at the kind of gamers who will lap up the same rebranded shit every year.

There are decent ones out there, I recommend singularity if you can find a copy.

Personally, I've stopped buying FPS games. Innovation? What's that?

I still play a few older titles now and then for nostalgia, but I've largely moved on from the genre.

Frankly, most MMORPGs suffer from the same lack of innovation as well.

The gaming industry is at a state where I will almost never pay full price for a game. I can think of one in the last 10 years. Everything else I've bought from Steam sales. That overhyped game that wasn't worth the $60 it cost new looks a lot better when it's under ten bucks.

I bought Batman: Arkham City, and thought it was good. I could have done without the Catwoman sections, since she wasn't as fun as Batman. I kind of expected to see more guys with sniper rifles at the end. Those were fun. I haven't played the other Arkham games, so I can't comment on them.

I tweaked the Dishonored configuration to make the AI a hell less forgiving and deadlier, along with better sight.

Maybe you're playing it on a shit console -- if so, then yeah, it's going to be boring.

Knife of Dunwall and Brigmore Witches actually complete the game (in terms of play time) and are a lot more interesting.

My only complaint is that the AI needs to be more realistic (they grow bored of dead bodies) and the maps are not nearly LONG enough.

Also, if you tweak the search breadcrumbs settings, the AI becomes more erratic (like people) and happens to stumble upon you more.

I really, really wish I could terrify them a lot more.

I actually just find it appaling that they wanted 60 dollars for a game with such a old engine

Operation Flashpoint Red River was awesome. Underrated in my opinion, not perfect but a game that really stands out among other FPS. That and Arma 3 are outstanding games.

DayZ, Borderlands and Starcraft 2 I think are overrated. I enjoy all 3 but they aren't nearly as good as people like to tell me they are. DayZ fucked itself when they thought that it should be PVP over PVE. Now its Deathmatch with retarded zombies and some glitches.

Borderlands is fun and lighthearted but like any Co-op story game its a pain in the ass to co-ordinate. A lot of the time the story is tricky to follow and its hard to tell if it matters or not. That and the difficulty curve seems to fly all over the place. One sec everything is dropping dead in 1 hit, then every mob feels like a boss fight.

Starcraft 2 just didn't really impress me, I play lots of base building strategy games and everyone repeatedly bugged me telling me how awesome it is. I was disappointing when it seemed to lack scale. I imagine the multiplayers great but I've already got friends I can play Halo Wars with..
