Open to all-would you sacrifice your child if god told you to?

Your reaction to my post, besides being misdirected, is out of proportion to the alleged insult. Methinks thou dost protest too much.

I just think a lot of the responses to these threads are all talk and no trouser.

And you don't see an appreciable difference between performing an action under supernatural duress, versus performing the same action willingly because a wizard told you?

You're equivocating.

Milgram Experiment Wrote:Before conducting the experiment, Milgram polled fourteen Yale University senior-year psychology majors to predict the behavior of 100 hypothetical teachers. All of the poll respondents believed that only a very small fraction of teachers (the range was from zero to 3 out of 100, with an average of 1.2) would be prepared to inflict the maximum voltage. Milgram also informally polled his colleagues and found that they, too, believed very few subjects would progress beyond a very strong shock. Milgram also polled forty psychiatrists from a medical school, and they believed that by the tenth shock, when the victim demands to be free, most subjects would stop the experiment. They predicted that by the 300-volt shock, when the victim refuses to answer, only 3.73 percent of the subjects would still continue and, they believed that "only a little over one-tenth of one percent of the subjects would administer the highest shock on the board."

In Milgram's first set of experiments, 65 percent (26 of 40) of experiment participants administered the experiment's final massive 450-volt shock...

You post something that presumes to know the minds of others. How is my reaction, which was aimed at you, the poster, misdirected? And how is it out of proportion? Let me put it this way: how would you feel if I said "You don't really believe in your god; you're just pretending. Deep down, you're an atheist, like everyone else is. You know you're deceiving yourself and others", or "If your devil came to your door, you'd get down on your knees and worship him out of fear. You're not a true believer"?

I'm not seeing a debunking; just the usual "methinks yadda yadda" spiel I and others like me get from people like you when we get angry over you presuming to speak for us.

Did you miss my comparison, by the way? Do you like it when people speak for you as if they know you and your opinion on something, even though they're utterly wrong? Do you like it when people call you a liar based on nothing but their own opinions on a subject that you happen to disagree on? More than that; on a subject where they can't know your opinion beyond what you tell them about your opinion?

god asked him to kill his son
god gives commandment "thou shalt not kill"
god has no idea what he/she/it wants!

He's changing the request from a clear message from a god to a simple request from a mortal with special powers. Moreover, he's specifying a different level of duress than one likely to be present in the face of a god. I suppose it depends on the specifics, the assumptions of which, he was playing fast and loose with. It's not clear Loki is anything more than a wizard, either.

That's like saying someone holding a loaded gun to your head and demanding you kneel is the same as drowning your children in a bathtub because God told you to.

Was a specific punishment outlined to Abraham if he did not sacrifice his child, or was he willing to do it just to retain God's favor?
