Aliens and Atheism

RE: Aliens and Atheism
I'd love if aliens existed, but I don't know if they do, I guess we'll have to wait
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

Taking into account that the universe has over 13 billion years i bet the chance that some life form evolved a lot earlier than us is pretty high.
Given that time to evolve intelligence... we (humans) might be for them on the level of dogs or cats Tongue
There might be also a possibillity that they are so advanced, they wouldn't even recognized "us" as an intelligent beings.

That is similar to what my fiance believes. He somewhat believes that due to old egyptian paintings and caveman "art" derive from the possibility of an extraterrestrial being visiting the earth to assist, or bump, humanity in to technology. Due to this, he thinks that this may be why a "god" or "gods" were thought to have existed.

Never happened.

Humans as bio-automatons. It crops up in sci-fi here and there. Pretty much how we see animals here on this planet, so it's not a stretch. I don;t know why we'd conceptualize them as "advanced" though, advanced towards what, with regards to what? Maybe aliens are largely mindless space-whales.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. We may never know.

There are 200 billion galaxies in the universe, each one has 100+ billion stars.

So far, 1810 extrasolar planets have been discovered, some are quite earth like. And that's just in our neighborhood of our galaxy.

So, just on numbers alone, the likelihood of other intelligent life in the universe seems to be a pretty sure bet.

The chances of said life visiting earth, almost nil.

For many reasons, the above scenario almost certainly did not happen.

The 'ancient astronaut' hypothesis is a perfect example of a 'just so story'.

To begin with, there are other, more likely explanations for ancient art and stories than alien encounters. If anything we should know about humanity, is that our capacity for imagination knows no bounds.

But besides there being better explanations for so called ancient astronauts, the hypothesis totally belittles human accomplishments. Just because we're talking about humans of several thousand years ago, does not mean they did not have their share of geniuses.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

. . . .

As it turns out, even 'slow' interstellar flight can fill a galaxy with colonies. As noted above, in a 13 billion year old universe, there is plenty of time for even craft capable of 10% light speed to go 'everywhere'.

Once a colony has the capability to build their own colonizing starship(s) you have an exponentiating situation. The colonies establish colonies, and those colonies establish colonies, and so on.

This is the essence of the Fermi Paradox. It takes only one (1 !!) planet that produces a life form capable of interstellar flight to accomplish a fully colonized galaxy in a few million years.

When Fermi asked "Where are they??", he was posing a profound question. Despite 13 billion years passing, there is demonstrably not a single life form capable of colonizing the galaxy yet.

I know the proving a negative thing, but the fact that there are no aliens in our solar system from another star is telling us something EXTREMELY significant about our entire galaxy. As of just a few million years ago, there are no other intelligent beings capable of interstellar flight and motivated to use it to establish colonies, ANYWHERE in our galaxy.

It is stunning to contemplate.

I think the odds of life elsewhere in the universe are high.
The odds of intelligent life elsewhere in our own galaxy... not so high.
We, our intelligence, seems to be a product of climate change and dinosaur extinction...
Had the dinosaurs never gone extinct and mammals would probably never develop out level of intelligence... would the lizards develop it? Who knows...

Let's not invoke the Gorn menace. I'm not sure we have a Kirk yet who can whip their ass.

RE: Aliens and Atheism
Yeah believing in aliens certainly doesn't have anything to do with atheism let alone contradicting it. In face I wouldn't be suprised if most atheist do believe in aliens, because when you consider the fact that there are over 100 billion galaxies, each of with with 100 billion stars, the possibility of their being other earth like planets with life on them is just tremendous. In fact i think NASA has recently discovered a few dozen earth like planets, however they are not able to tell if there is intelligent life on them.
