RE: Spare the rod, spoil the child

When it comes to non-abusive spanking (especially in dangerous situations) I think it's just a difference in parenting styles. This is not a topic that I see any point in debating.
There is one in there about spanking the bare bottom of a 4 year old girl 12 times. That is a topic I will debate. It's child abuse if it's a real story. After reading some of those stories I think many of those people are just perverts getting off on making up sick stories.

Why? . Surely the tricky issues are exactly what we should be talking about!

Probably because I was in a seriously abusive relationship and the idea of anyone ever striking my child for any reason makes me want to vomit.
And yet I torture myself by coming into these threads because apparently I'm an idiot.

It does seem oddly masochistic...
And I'm sorry to hear that

Absolutely. But I only have so many eyes and hands, fewer than I have children. A little bit of menace, a little bit of learned avoidance, goes a looooong way for me. I work while I watch the kids. It's not an ideal situation but it is what it is. I'm also trying to teach my stubborn ass son a lesson about bullying (specifically that there's always a bigger bully). Thing is, he's harder than a gypsy boxer and built like a brick shithouse. When he swings his mitts into his sisters face he gets a swift pop on the ass - followed by a hefty stretch in solitary. If he wasn't capable of hurting her as much as he is, or if he responded to well reasoned explanations with regards to why you shouldn't hit your sister - then I'd have some options. If I can't impart that lesson on him then so be it, I'll settle for him not hitting his sister for no reason other than pain avoidance. Whatever doesn't end up with a broken nose and a trip to the ER. Been there, don't plan on going back. Poor MoMo had to have her eyebrows stitched up after getting a dresser dropped on her head doing things they shouldn't have been doing. I had to hold her down. Hellions I say!
I've explained to my kids, more times than I can count, about all the things that might seriously hurt them, but you know kids...sometimes they've just gotta test that, eh? All of this shit falls squarely on my shoulders, my wife has never raised a hand to our children, and rarely raises her voice. Somebodies gotta be the dick, and I guess I picked the short straw on that count.
12 slaps on the ass? What do you have to say to a kid that 1 slap won't handle? Fuck......
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

My son pushed my daughter once...she broke his nose. It was....a confusing day for all of us.

Why bizarrely? <snip>
Bizarrely because alpha male and I do not have a strong history of agreeing with each other. Also because it's generally the religious types who take absolute "it's just WRONG" type positions.
I agree with the rest of your post 100%. Parenthood Is simple... Until you have to do it. It's a well known truth that in medicine it's very unwise to treat your own children. You have no objectivity. That's why gps take their kids to other gps. And why I so often find myself thinking "shit, could have done that better. It's easy to raise other people's kids!
Ok, I get discovering you agree with someone you hardly ever agree with. But your religious circles must be different than mine because I know more Christian spankers. The hard core non spanking parents I've known have been deists, Buddhists, or just very liberal. Though they sometimes snap as the child gets older and go hard over to spanking.
I'm sure you're sample is real too. I'd love to see some statistics.

My youngest bit her sister twice. They were both very small. That was one I threatened to spank over. Wasn't necessary because the threat did it. But yeah, sometimes there aren't any other options.

I'm sure you're sample is real too. I'd love to see some statistics. Quite honestly I wouldn't know who of my acquaintances does or does not. But in the UK religion tends to be far more institutional than in the US. If there is a correlation at all I'd be surprised if it was a strong one.
The bible does directly tell parents that corporal punishment is the way forward.
