The law already protects people from social discrimination because of what they dress, at least here. If people don't like women wearing short tops (same would go for a man) that's a matter of social morality and it's not anyone's business. I find short tops unappealing because they remind me of a personality that likes to be the centre of attention, and like it or not, this is most times the case, the stereotype is there for a reason... It doesn't mean I have any problem with people wearing what they wear. I think alike of men wearing super tight sleeveless t shirts, it's just throwing a bag of attention and I find it reprehensible. Maybe I'm just old fashioned

We shouldn't send our resources there, but incentive women's rights progress in those locations

They can bang whoever they want, few people would actually want to prohibit it or interfere directly with it, you just can't demand people to socially accept it, that's up to every individual mind

Sure, but spending most resources fixing a less important problem is not worth the time. It's like a doctor healing a patient who twisted an ankle instead of performing a surgery to save someone near death.
If the patient with the broken ankle is within reach - and the patient near death is half the world away......

We put our effort where we imagine it will have the most leverage. For most of us, that doesn't extend to sub-saharan africa or the siberian tundra. If everybody made the quarter mile circle around their house a better place we wouldn't even be having this conversation..would we? lol All that said, nothing stops us from doing both, but we're still going to see alot more effort expended (and to greater effect) locally, and that's to be expected, isn't it?

Sure, so let's just keep things how they are. I didn't say we should intervene directly, but incentive or promote it. There is nothing wrong and simple acts will accomplish this, the example of prohibiting the burka is a good indirect form of protest.

I think that the operative drive here is that we don't like things the way they are. That's agreed to unspoken whether someone thinks we ought to fix things locally or dedicate our collectively organised effort where things are "the worst".

RE: Modern feminism
Personally I tend to read about the world but live locally. In fact, I only want so much intrusion from the world as a whole. No minutia. It is dehumanizing to stretch our concerns across the globe instead of tuning into our own village. In one sense, those who do are considered great humanists and awarded prizes. But it warps the dimensions of a human life, increases stress and dilutes the effectiveness of what actions we finally take. I refuse to turn over all my attention to my freaked out conscious brain to dwell on just how fucked we are. I'm not willing to wait until all the billions of people in the world are relatively okay before I find out if it is possible to live one satisfactory life.

That's what I'm talking about. Happy wife = happy life. Check mate ephemeral nazis.

A while back a few of us tried to access a truly fem-nazi dominated forums. The name escapes me. The place was dominated by women who would tolerate no disagreement. The only men who could post there were ones who fell all over themselves to apologize at every turn. When thoughts about sexism turns dissent into thought crime and forbids its expression, then I think it is fair to say we have entered fem-dominated den of nazis.

I got into a discussion with a lady named Sarah Braasch on an atheist blog, taking issue with her using the term "gender genocide" to describe sexism in America. I have the same sort of issue with the idea of "rape culture", insofar as it hyperbolizes an issue to the point of caricature, thus devaluing it of any usefulness. Too many feminists are too quick to excoriate those who don't agree 100% with them. Too many feminists don't want a dialogue; they want a harangue.

The idea that America is some hyper-sexist place compared to the rest of the world is completely ignorant of the conditions that women live in in most of the world, as well as being ignorant of the extreme sexism that exists in many European countries as well. Not that things are perfect here, but the reported rapes in the U.S. is lower lower than countries like Belgium and Sweden. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statis...s_2012.png Also ask any woman who has lived in a Mediterranean country whether the U.S. is more sexist. That's to make no mention of Latin America, China or the Middle East.

Like I said before, it's not like the U.S. is perfect or anything but to use it as an example for a sexist county is extremely ignorant of the world. So many people who bash America are the same people who have never left America.

Belgium and Sweden have more muslims compared to the entire population than the US. In Sweden rape rates went high after massive muslim immigration. I'm trying to not make this seem like a prejudice, but it just fits perfectly, 1+1=2
