al-Jathiya 24 "And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time." And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming.".
The Arabian pagans had no concept of an afterlife and were mostly materialists. Skepticism was already abundant in Makkah before Atheism became fashionable, al-Maari is such an example of the aftermath.
What I find funny is how this ayat sets up the stupidity of Muslims. It professes that those who do not believe have no knowledge or proof that they don't live on. This is an example where a negative is presumed to be a positive in argumentation. This pretty much set sup the hypocrisy of Muhammad and his disdain towards a naturalistic viewpoint of life

I read the whole Qur'an, I took it for what it is. I came to realize that the Qur'an was a political manual which simply used the divine command notion.
The divine command theory is an idea that if a person says "god authorized this" then it becomes valid amongst a society.
The Qur'an is just outdated if you ask me

Well that is all that comes to mind. The killing, barbarism and everything in it is because it was written in a harsh time of Arabia thus it is a harsh book and has kept Arab lands harsh and back warded to this very day.
In all honesty I could write my own Qur'an(sort of am) and cut out the barbarism in it.
Again, the Qur'an spends a lot of time masturbating on political and social issues and the religion god crap is mainly dove into deeper by hadith.
What is it you think the issue of the Qur'an mainly is?

I don't buy that harsher times meant for harsher passages. That implies that their god's opinions of right and wrong are dictated by current human culture, which is not befitting a divine being. Or that he's too impotent to really change society into something progressive.

Why are you acting as if Allah is real? This makes no sense.
The Qur'an was composed during a violent era in Arabia, a period that came after the Nabateans. The past empires were dead and it was reduced to tribalism.
Are you a Muslim by the way?

I think it helps the debate against theists if I don't just repeat "gods don't exist" at them. So I point out flaws in their ideas of their god, even though I don't believe he's real anyway.
I know exactly why the passages in the holy books are outdated, and needed to change over time.
I'm an ex christian, actually.

When you use hypothetical worlds please let me know because I love using them but it seems nobody else does.
I just go about with the impression nobody gets it.
What I was referring to though is very intact with what you are saying. A major argument by Muslims is morality of the Qur'an, they love to bash the Mushrikun about their morality yet Islam is worst than the previous pagan eras.
