I don't get why there is so much surprise about inbreed between neanderthals and homo sapiens, it's clear that they weren't that much different from homo sapiens and could easily be mistaken as one. I doubt that if a homo sapiens found a neaderthal he would think like "omg that's an entirelly different species, kill it with fire!!!". I think it'd be more like "hey big guy , what's up, we need some help hunting a mammoth here and there and you look like big and tough, let's go eat yummy mammoth", and lived happily ever after.

Because for many years the proponents of the Out of Africa theory maintained that there had been no inter-breeding between these separate "species."


Similarly, for many years the proponents of the Clovis-First theory maintained that the Americas were uninhabited until Siberian hunters crossed over on a land bridge. Archaeology has trashed that theory in the last 20 years just as genetics has hammered Out of Africa on the inter-breeding routine.
