The subsidence of coastal Louisiana has nothing to do with plate tectonics. It is entirely man made. There are two main causes. The first is anti flooding programs on the Mississippi River caused the river to drop its sediment load up river and prevented the river from carring much of it down river to be deposited in the Mississippi delta area. Sediments naturally erode, compact and subside once deposited. When the river was carrying its natural sediment load deposition balanced subsidence, erosion and compaction. Now the delta erodes and settles faster than it is being replenished.

The second is withdrawal of natural gas and oil from their reservoirs cause the overlaying ground to settle.

Fair play, that makes sense.

If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

Global warming can result in local cooling.
It's a very complex set of interactions that the are hard to predict.
So you may have to wrap up warmer AND learn how to swim.

Strange how there is little debate among climate scientists of we are significantly forcing climate change (Hint: We are) but the public continues to stall.

Chuck nailed it - it is within our interest to keep the climate the way we have experienced it in the last couple of centuries.

The problem is that most people confuse weather with climate. They also do not understand that the weather will not be uniform with the whole planet. They think that GW means the whole earth will be hot, and everything will be a desert. However, they do not understand the topographical, geological, atmospheric, oceanic, and meteorological effects that GW will cause. It is that huge misunderstanding of atmospheric phenomena that the fossil fuel lobby exploits. So basically in their mind chaotic weather patterns such as the freak winter storm this last year? (or this year?) = GW false. When in fact the more chaotic the weather the more likely it is of a major climate shift.

That's because we live in what future historians might call "The Age of Solipsism".

I'm not sure how it is in other countries but in mine, our media has apparently decided that all knowledge is just opinion and who can say what's "real" anymore. They do little or no fact checking of any statement made by politicians, delegating such dirty work to the bloggers, where fact checking can be ignored.

Instead of acting like a public watchdog and investigating claims made by politicians, our media brings on "both sides" (usually a hard line neo-con on one side and a milquetoast faux liberal like Harold Ford) to debate the issue and allow the viewers to decide for themselves what they want to believe, almost as if each personal reality conforms to one's tastes in belief systems.

Anytime we have a disaster, our media is loathe to pin the blame on one political party, because that just wouldn't be fair you know. Our media doesn't want to appear partisan and reporting facts, if the implicate one person or party, needs to be carefully balanced with an implication on the other side. The "extremes on both sides" are always responsible for everything that goes wrong in America. If you were to record the most often used words in our media, I suspect "both sides" would rank high on that list.

So about this Global Warming, it's a "controversy". On one side, you have scientists and peer reviewed studies that appear in respectable science publications. On the other side, you have conspiracy theorists and questionable claims that appear in self-published blogs. So it's a "controversy" then. And who can say who's right? Let's bring on an accomplished scientist and some-nut-with-a-blog to debate the issue and let the audience make up their own minds what they want to believe is true.

Creationists in America, among other groups, have clearly gotten used to this kid-gloves treatment by our media and been spoiled by it. We could see this in their reaction to the lack of "equal time" on Cosmos.

Yesterday, I had an exchange with one crackpot online who believes there's an elaborate conspiracy where something something global warming hoax so something something international secret cabal something something Barack Obama something something one world global dictatorship. He had a lengthy post with screeds cut and pasted from some conservative blogs.

My response was to simply dismiss him as a science-denying crackpot conspiracy theorist shrieking in hyperbolic all caps what appears on questionable blogs.

He whined that I just insulted him while he was trying to present "facts".

I told him to go submit those "facts" that disprove Global Warming to a reputable peer-reviewed science journal. Until then, I'll continue to mock him as a science-denying, conspiracy-theory loving wackjob. Some people just don't deserve to be dignified with a debate. Some people just need to be laughed out of the room.

I do not have a long reply, however you are indeed right. In America they have killed the "truth" concept. It is all part of the social engineering with in Edward Bernay's book and what not, all to keep the elite in power....same story different characters.

GW promoters are all talk no action from what I have seen. Well there were a few good ones in America, but Obama pretty much gave them a big "fuck you" when he played a round of golf the oil executives...fucking dick....change my ass.

So by default you back the oil companies whom pollute? See this is the logic I do not follow. One why are Christians skeptical of GW, two who cares what the other sides are doing. It is happening it is moral thing to do to combat it. We impact the environment and we need to start taking responsibility for our actions.

I push for environmentalism, which is so much more intensive than the charade that is GW. GW is only something people promote to feel good about themselves without actually doing anything.
