Shaman, I think you're a very good contribution to the forum, but will you please stop trying to elevate yourself above the rest of us? We're having a discussion. If you don't like what we're talking about, don't join in.

Not to worry. There are government ads and national news stories about this issue every year. Perhaps some deaths are even prevented. Who knows.

But the child is dead now. And there's nothing to be done about this particular child.

Yes, there's an increased risk of dying from heat stroke in the hotter months of the year. That seems obvious. 20 cases a year is a bit alarming. That's a bad way to die.

I remember a story where a kid was suffering, and the fire department was there with the mother. She was missing her keys or something, and told them not to break the window until she got back from her house or something. Luckily the guys did the smart thing and just broke into the vehicle once she was out of earshot.

Some people really don't seem to have much maternal instinct, if any.

Which part of my post, which you quoted, specifically suggests that I have an elevated sense over others? I'm being sincere. I have made three statements relating to my personal feelings in this particular matter.

Quote:A child died, that is all I can focus on here.

and...
Quote:That, and how to prevent future recurrences through awareness and unity.

To follow with the final statement is also a matter of personal opinion...

Quote:Now is not the time to be divisive.

I do not see how any of my personal opinions have suggested that I am elevating myself above others. At all times, I endeavor to not be the way that you have apparently perceived me as being here.

I, along with all members here, are encouraged to post our opinions, feelings and experiences, and I am conscientious with respect toward the opinions of others, and not once have I offered that someone's opinion, just because it confronted my own, was in any way inappropriate or self-righteous.

If my contribution is not to be considered a part of the discussion then I would honestly prefer to bow out of a scene where compassion is excused as pride. Undecided

The obvious opprobrium and ridicule from the community for someone so disconnected from her children serves as a spur to people to pay attention.

Anyways... I know it is productive, at least for myself as a new atheist, to process these thoughts and discuss relevant events with people who appear to be operating in the basis of reality. If my thread came off as divisive, it was not intentional. I'm not an anti-theist; at least not yet.

I am interested in understanding the cultural norms within the atheist community. I've read some entertaining and colorful posts that I thought might have crossed the line...mainly those Atheists conversing with Theists. I am fine with that. Let us all just be free to speak our minds and discover different frames of reference; therefore further evolving our understanding of truth. At least that is why I am here.

As I said, if focusing on criticizing religion, rather than discussing the importance of child care is the point of this discussion, then I acknowledge my ill-spent input toward a matter I misconstrued.

Dude! You are who led the discussion there!

Perhaps at first glance.

I'm trying to discern if this is a Christian bashing thread or a stupid adult thread.

And

(BTW- only one person had yet even mentioned Christianity at this point)

Let us hope that it is not yet another "us vs. them" thread, and that it's just highlighting the importance of being a responsible child guardian.

So, it's not to put a focus on the need for extra care to be taken when providing child care, but to highlight your disdain for religion - got it. That's all I was asking Wink

That's when you said:

You are the one making it divisive. This thread has contained talk about awareness, abuse, religion and the grief this kind of thing causes. You built a big strawman in this thread, and I'm not afraid to call you out on it.

So what's your point?

Why did the child die? Can that cause be ameliorated?

The child, sad to say, is but one casualty of religion's many millions.

I get what you're saying, that the death is tragic, but you know what? Tragedy happens about eighty million times a day around the world. That the child died is tragic. That the child died because mom was busy worshiping is germane to an atheist forum.
