I, too, have never once had a religious or a spiritual experience. I have no idea what any of those things are.

What about those of us who have never had spiritual 'experiences' in the first place?
Perhaps you know someone who has. Also such experiences have been reported for as recorded history and presumably go back much further back. Consider it a cultural phenomena.

I don't know of anyone who's had such an experience. I know of a great many people who believe that they have, of course.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. I have, many many times. Turns out it was a bill of goods - in my experience.
(if, for example, you wanted to turn your living room into a Golden Dawn Temple or an OTO house I can help with that. Ditto with a wiccan circle, a christian church, a pagan blot......on and on the list goes)

To me that sounds an awful lot like, "In order to have a mystical experience you have to believe you're going to have a mystical experience."
If I believe I'm going to have one beforehand, I'll already be convincing myself that I'm having one even if I'm not.
