You did the right thing. Hell, there can be a placebo effect especially on old folks, ones that were way more indoctrinated than most of us.

I don't know if the OP was being honest when he/she said "I could have hit her". But lets be honest here, if he/she was seriously considering hitting a coworker over this he/she has some issues that could probably be helped in counseling.

If such issues exist, I figure that religious crap might be the source of such anger. Also yes, better to seek proper conseling, than the vacuous promise of hocus pocus they sell on some buidings. I do not hate theists, all I have for them is scorn and sarcam regarding their silly beliefs. Yet, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I agree. However I think that the person is not serious, just somebody trying to make Atheists look bad, to see if anybody would agree with her (which I would note they did not)

I think you did the right thing OP. Depending on the rules of your place, you may have grounds to lodge a complaint after the fact. Of course I think it's inappropriate and unprofessional talk, especially the gay thing. Sounds like she was just giving her ego a massage.

To the doctor example, that is disgusting. He should know better than that, and I would definitely make a formal complaint if that was me. You shouldn't increase the stress on a family already in a hard situation by handing out false hope and preaching.
