Believing that we can't be good people without the magic skydaddy book is one of the most disgusting things about Christianity (and some other religions as well).

That's the point though. I know you would say that "no one is good, but One," and all that, but many of these preachers are pretending to be (and are viewed as) 'good, godly men.'
I have no problem with preachers having faults. I have a problem with those who preach the most about the very things they are doing repeatedly. I also have problems with any Christian who pretend to be anything more than what we are. Preacher or grandmother makes no difference.

Holding up the bible as any kind of worthwhile document is offensive. Simple as that.
If you don't agree with the bible, get another book and don't call yourself a Christian.
Indoctrination is beyond offensive, and using a Bronze Age book to justify your prejudice, and even try and make laws, is despicable.

Good is relitive, meaning it is always the lessor of two evils. Oscar Sheindler was consider by many to be a 'Good Nazi' Because he saved several hundred jews. This man was only judged 'good' because he was the lessor of the evil that is attributed to his Nazi brethern. But when compared to today's standard he is a monster who owned and operated a forced labor camp, who's sole purpose was to produce the hardware needed for the German war machine. Who saw many more die in slavery under his care than he saved. But, because he was the best Nazi, he is touted as a hero.
So again 'good' is relitive. That being the case I will agree that people can be 'good' because that bar can be raise or lowered to fit our current soceitial understanding/need of that term.
Also with that in mind that is why the current standard of 'good' has very little meaning to God. His standard of 'worthyness' is based in Righteousness, not whether or not one can simply be better than the evil of this world. As such, None are righteous/None are 'good' by the standard of righteousness.

Oh I understand, Drips. God is the standard of righteousness, and there's no way we can live up to it. We're "fallen" and must redeem ourselves through faith.
That's precisely what's disgusting.

Because to pretend that the book and the followers don't contradict themselves constantly is somewhat hilarious.

Oh, sure. Christians usually ignore most of that stuff, though. Whenever they don't, that's when things get offensive.
It's offensive to me when they do ignore the tough stuff, particularly when they don't want to personally follow it, but think other tough stuff is just fine for EVERYBODY else to follow, especially under force of law.

The idea that the only way we can be truly "good" is by following the untestable and unchangable dictations of an unassailable and unverifiable absolute source is destructive to human progress.
