If it was flying high, then it was huge and fast.

To put it in context, airliners from Perth international airport fly over our house on a daily basis heading north to the mines. When they pass over our house they are only at a few thousand feet(the airport is only 25 miles away so they have only just taken off) and travelling at least 500mph.

What we saw was much larger and brighter and moving a lot faster than they do.

At a few thousand feet, they will not be traveling at 500+ mph. Firstly, they're generally incapable of doing so at low altitudes; the denser air imposes a lower speed limit. Secondly, that close to the airport, air traffic is very regulated regarding both vectors and speed limits, and even on a climb-out ATC won't be allowing that sort of speed near or in the pattern.

If the airport is 25 miles away, a few thousand feet seems to be a pretty conservative climb-out. Perhaps y'all do things differently there -- I've never been in the air over Australia -- but here in America, climb-outs are generally steep and slow so that the airliner can get to its most efficient operating altitude quickly.

Where do you live again? Several years ago I saw something fitting that description in California, a large, somewhat bright, orange, and somewhat hazy and somewhat spherical object, moving south east to north west, faster than any commercial airplane at medium to high altitude, but much slower then any meteror, at perhaps half and hour after sunset. I would say it's visual size was approximate the same as the full moon.

I was able to tell exactly what it was because part of the through its arc in the sky, it suddenly dimmed and its spherical shape rapidly thinned down to almost like the shape of short searchlight beam within about 1 second, and then winked out for a split second before suddenly ballooning back to the original bright spherical shape again. I guessed I was looking at the exhaust plume of a rocket above atmosphere, still being illuminated by the sun because of its height. The change in the shape of the plume was the result of one stage burning out, being ejected, and a second stage igniting.

The next day my guess was confirmed, as news report indicated the airforce fired an unarmed minuteman missile booster from vandenberg airforce base on an unusual northly trajectory the previous evening as a part of some test, and at the time I lived approximately 350 north of vandenberg AFB.

I live in western oz and no, we don't have anything as cool as rocket launches.

If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71.

I saw basically the same thing three orangish glowing orbs traveling near eachother but would change position so they weren't from one object

Its known as the glowing orange orb phenomena, it's well documented and has been reported over several continents. Basically a Red/orange/yellow orb or, orbs travelling about the same height and speed the OP described.

There's no explanation as of yet, since I witnessed it myself ( sorry no video) I researched it. And the closest non UFO explanation is that its a form of the Aurora borealis. But there's less evidence it was a "weakened form of the northern lights" than there is, that this phenomena is actually a UFO

Here's a list of literally HUNDREDS of witness accounts from regular people to members of the air force, all recounting basically the same exact sighting

@simplemoss

Sounds like those paper bag lanterns to me...

We had a friend at NCAR who used to track lost weather balloons by the U.F.O. reports---back in the primitive 70s.

I don't know what you saw, but I suspect a drone that appeared higher than it was or fireworks.

Glad to see I'm not the only one seeing these things.

I was watching a science program and there is a valley somewhere in America where there is a highway on one side and if you are standing in a particular location, lights seem to float and dart. Scientist figured out they were merely car headlights and depending on the temperature difference of the air in layers the light would bend giving it the illusion of floating.

That's the Marfa lights that were explained as car headlights

There is another one in Norway where lights often appear, but no good explanation yet

Zen Badger, I wonder if you might get ideas by looking at the standard questions and procedures that UFO field investigators are supposed to follow?
