It's a shame, he showed promise. I think he is too touchy about his religion.

Haha! Big Grin

He was blasted for telling people the same thing Smile As far as I saw he was very much prepared to back up everything that he said. Brian was ranting at him about things he never said, and not addressing anything he actually said, just like he does me. It was an offloading session for hurt people letting loose on a visitor here for debate. Min said "fuck all of you". This is not debate Rob. This is therapy.

High hopes that he would withstand some abhorrent treatment and stick around to be some numb skulls punch bag?

The guy was trying to be reasonable. Damn you guys treat this place like therapy lol. I seriously think we should have a section just for venting so it doesn't leak all over the forums and scare decent people off.

How is it you managed to stay here all this time when we said similar things to you? Do you want people to fear others and be insecure with their positions are do you want them to at a minimum to be brave enough to defend their positions?

He didn't run away because of our word choice, he ran away because we didn't roll over and go "oh, that's cute".

Um yes I did. I was responding to the claim that Christianity brought civility to the west. Christians certainly claim that but as I said before, that was our evolutionary empathy doing that, not the religion itself. The west became civil in spite of religion, not because of it. Just like Islam you can find very tribal verses in the bible where God condones, sanctions or punishes himself, those who disobey, dissent or are outsiders.

It was only when Christians refused to do what the bible said because their real empathy was kicking in they started cherry picking the bible and skipped the violent verses that the west became civil. They watered it down to justify civility.

And again, that cherry picking does not avoid their prior barbaric past, nor does it change the final book in which all non Christians get tortured forever. So it is very apt to equate such a character like an abusive spouse because that is what they do. The beat you into submission, then when that doesn't work they say they are sorry but they did it because they love you, then they go back to being violent anyway.

Yes it is shocking to the theist to think of it in that light, but there is no other way to view this God character once you stop cherry picking take the entire book as it is.

Now if he wants us to sugar coat what we think about that book, he is asking us to lie to him and lie to ourselves, which is dishonest.

I'm not going to start a debate right now because it'll be pointless anyway.
But if I said anything about the bad things atheism did in the past you wouldn't like it too. I respected that and kept it to where we are in the world today. I am not sensitive about any religion and there are 1% crazies in every group everywhere who wish to interfere with other groups- christians, muslims, hindus, Buddhist and even atheists.

BUT now we've reached a limit. And bad things have been done in the name of atheism. Atheist communist states like former Soviet Union under stalin confiscated religious buildings and monasteries, preached ridicule of religion in schools. Don't even get me started on the number of people Stalin or chairman Mao killed. I expect educated people as yourselves to know that the number of people killed during these regimes exceeds the people killed during the Crusades
/ witch hunts.
So see? The good things about atheism like . . . I don't know . . . Secularism, is far outweighed by evils like the communist regimes
I could say that tragic episode is the sole way atheists should be portrayed. But I know it's much more than that. Wouldn't THAT be narrow way of looking at things?
You say a few christians are messing with your civil rights. But a certain communist country of atheists across the ocean are STILL persecuring christians even to this day.
Wouldn't saying atheists follow a murderous ideology be a narrow way of looking at something?

Exactly . . . That's my point

No no no. You are not going to stay and debate? You're just going to make a bunch of baseless assertions and not back them up, right? Nice.

I don't know why it would hurt my feelings if you said something about the bad stuff atheists have done....we are not a team. Even if you had some evidence about some really bad atheists. The things they've done were most likely not done in the name of atheism (because that would make no sense), and their actions do not reflect on me. I do not hold the same beliefs or values as them.

I'm sure I answered a thread that was the same as this the other day, but since this one is fresher I'll repeat what I said here;

[insert generic disclaimer here about how not all individual Muslims are bad and we shouldn't judge individuals]

Moving onto the actual religion as a whole however, I find this "Islam is a religion of peace" statement faux-liberals love throwing around to be totally absurd. We're talking about a religion that has been at war with every other major religion, including itself taking into account conflict between different sects of Islam, in the last century alone. True, there's no smoke without fire, and there are two sides to every story. However, when the same pattern keeps appearing, over and over again, it becomes obvious that this religion is totally incompatible with and intolerant of any other culture it meets.

Think of it as that naughty school child. If every other child in the class has an issue with that child, more than likely that says more about them than it does the other children.
"Adulthood is like looking both ways before you cross the road, and then getting hit by an airplane"  - sarcasm_only

"Ironically like the nativist far-Right, which despises multiculturalism, but benefits from its ideas of difference to scapegoat the other and to promote its own white identity politics; these postmodernists, leftists, feminists and liberals also use multiculturalism, to side with the oppressor, by demanding respect and tolerance for oppression characterised as 'difference', no matter how intolerable."

You're kidding me right? You can insult atheism as much as you want, I don't care. But you're insulting absolutely nothing. Secularism is not atheism. Anti-theism is not atheism. Atheism is nothing but a response to unsupported God claims, which is disbelief. If you want to insult that, go ahead.

Exactly.
Atheism is not anti-theism. True Christianity as practiced by the apostles was not the murderous and corrupt Christianity in the middle ages.
As I pointed out-it's wrong to believe that atheists are murderers, as well as believing christians to be slave-keeping homophobes who rape women. You share nothing with those atheists like stalin. Well we don't share anything with those christians of the middle ages. Neither do we share anything with those bible bashers (other than belief in god) who most likely use it to justify their hatred or whatever
Atheism is just disbelief. And Christianity to most of us is just a way of life to lead to the unificationin christ. That's it.
But you have to accept that bad things WERE done to christians by anti theists (yes in the name of quitting stupid "superstitions). And fundie christians HAVE and still do hurtful things.
But that's my point . . . Not all believers are violent and not all non believers are violent.

So please consider refraining from treating one thing as golden and the other as pure evil

But Parker Tan was correct. Don't take what I say as lecturing anyone. Just take it as friendly advice. Take it or leave it.

Didn't think that would hurt anyone but it seems it did
