'Drich, which of the millions of different christian denominations goes to Heaven?'
RE: 'Drich, which of the millions of different christian denominations goes to Heaven?'
Off subject but now I want Korean food. It is almost midnight here and I can't go get Bulgogi or Bibimbap(name of this dish might be a little wrong lol) Damn Drich for having a parent that comes from a country with delicious food and making me hungry.

Was your grandfather drafted into the Japanese army in WW 2?

oh, yeah??? Where? I've lived here 4 decades and never heard of this mass migration.

Quote:Something that a person might notice, a christian person, for example, about those congregations is that their view of god and christ has been molded by a shared cultural experience trending a whole hell of alot closer to "God the Benevolent Despot" rather then the more european...and therefore to us more traditional, "Prince of Peace" model.
ROFLOL ever been to a white or black baptist or Lutheran church service?

My mother's congergation leans more toward the prosperity doctrine types. (Name and claim money and healings) that sort of thing.

I currently goto a hell fire and brimstone church who's membership is primarly white. Why? Because my wife grew up in that church, and her grandfather literally help build it.

They think I am way too liberal, and my mother's people think I am too conservitive. In truth my beliefs come straight from the bible, with no religious filter. That means on some issues I am seemingly way too liberal while others I am too conservative for those who change their bibles to fit their particular likings.

Quote:It's not a rule, just a trend. That particular group of christians actually -was- hellishly persecuted, and while it may seem counterintuitive, a persons experience with earthly rulers might color the way they view celestial ones - even if they're being persecuted by the former while bowing down to the latter. That sort of stuff makes it's way to their kids, so on and so forth.
my mother's family did indeed live through hell at the hands of the Japanese, and again with the threat of invasion from the north. Maybe that is why when they came here and converted to Christianity they sought a church that spoke of a prosperity doctrines and how to pray and appeal to God for the good life rather the Hell Fire and brimstone the local white people seem to enjoy.

Quote:I doubt I need to mention much more to explain my interest......just wondering if it's another example of the effect of culture on faith, the way that different cultures or people with different cultural underpinnings view god, or what they see as an "acceptable" way to view god.

Actually I was not welcome at my mother's churchas my siblings and I were the only ones who were not fluent in Korean. (All the lessons and socializing were strictly in korean.) my mom would have to go outside to speak with me in English so as not to make the others "uncomfortable."[/quote]

Those foods were for the wealthy. Kinda like how chinese food as we know it here (take out) is/was like special occasion treats. Real chinese food still contains stuff most people don't want to scrap off the bottom of their shoes.

Like wise real korean food is just poor farmers way of controlling the spoilage long enough to make it last. Or to push spoilage quickly past the point of decay to firmintation. It often smells like death, but tastes good.

Before WWI Japan and Korea officially became one nation. Unofficially Japan invaded korea, took its lands and killed it high ranking/royal families/land owners and enslaved everyone else. Why? Japan needed food to feed its army and people. And korean officials were corrupt, so the ruling class sold everyone out to become apart of the Japanese high soceity. then Because Japan was an ally after WWI they were allowed to keep the lands they annexed. My mother's Father's family owned lots of land. The japs killed everyone except the kids. The girls went off to "comfort" the soldiers and the boys got to be plantation slaves.. 30 years later when things got bad for the japs (towards the end of WWII) and they knew the Americans were comming (before the Abomb after Okinawa/the first loss of emperial home land in a bazillion years) the japs took every man woman and child and taught them how to stop American bullets for the jap soldiers with the guns behind them.

So no, he wasnt really drafted. It was more of a we will bayonet you here, after we make you watch as we kill your family. or come with us, and stop American bullets in Japan, while your family (moms brothers) stays here and gets to starve to death while they grow all the food the jap army eats.

If Dirch is liberal why isn't he acting secular.

I stayed in Korea for six months back in 89?. I was either in Songton(spelling) or Suwon. I visitrd both but only stayed on one. The Koreans I knew weren't wealthy but ate Bulgogi and dishes like that. There were some street vendors outside Osan Air Force Base who would sell Yaki Mandu and these little thin packs made with vegetables. I grew up outside of Ft Bragg and many of my friends had a parent who was Korean. They ate those foods also. Cucumber kimchi is the bomb by the way. Korean food is highly underrated and is some of the best food ever

I can't do smilies on thid phone but imagine one with a confused expression here because I don't know either

I have trouble doing quotes within quotes. When I used the term drafted, Drich I was thinking that your grandfather must have been forced. People can be very cruel to one another. I have very happy memories of Korea and it is sad that the people of that country suffered so much

Omg seriously?
Here are ten issues I have dealt with this week.

1)I believe that there is more than one group of Christians going to heaven.
2) the type of music I used in my classes
3) they teach a check list theology/legalism/rules based salvation (what most of you believe)
4)God isn't sending people to Hell to burn forever.
5) the doctrine of grace and forgiveness, verses the old 'you need to try harder and follow God's law more closely.'
6) My views on salvation/baptism (basically what I told you that we are only responsible to what we have been given rather than a specific 8 point plan that one must follow to the letter)
7) they don't like how I take meaning from the bible by citing whole blocks, chapters and even whole books as points or proof for a precept or idea. (Over board with context)
8) they hold tightly to their specific traditions for the sake of tradition. I always need to know why we do what we do. (I ask too many questions.)
9) I do not respect the elders final 'verdicts' on doctrinal matters if they can not properly support their various doctrines.
10) I do not subscribe to their specific brand of Christianity™
