No, I think that was really well spent money and damned sure worth the time.

Have to poke in your nose with your no cent worth of comment, don't you?
I said its a waste to time and money, so it is!

And FYI, I didn't refer to quran which you seem to mention in your reply.

No, he was referring to the Bible. Also, YOU say its a waste, so it IS? Well, how about this, the question is titled "You're OPINIONS on it" so your comment is an OPINION. Not a fact. But fear not, I value everybody's opinions on it, positive or negative, to get a good idea on what to expect from my purchase.
If pinkie pie isn't real, then how do you explain the existence of ponies, huh? If ponies are real, then that's proof that Pinkie Pie is real. Checkmate, christians!  Heart

You think the Quran came before the Bible? Tongue

You knew damned well I was referring to the bible, but the Koran is a book of myth written by scientifically ignorant humans too. Nothing scientific about either. All holy books written in our species history are nothing but human concocted wishful thinking reflecting the social desires of the times they were written in. They are hardly science textbooks.

I think he's one of the religious trolls I've read about here.

I've never really read any book from famous atheists but I have a question that fits here perfectly (and it's important):

Atheists who have read the books, which would you recommend for me to offer someone who is in the process of deconversion but still is trying to cope with reality without god and having trouble? Basically which one is better to directly prove religion is total BS?

The best way to de-convert is to take a step back and critically read the Bible. I'm being perfectly honest, here.

The God Delusion is a good starter. It opens the door to thinking critically about religion.

People dislike Ehrman, but God's Problem and Misquoting Jesus really gave me the evidence I needed to put a label on my beliefs.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

You're kidding, right?

First of all, stop with the giant, bold, red text. That honestly, seriously, really gets on people's nerves.

Second of all, there is no reputable evidence that the stories peddled by religion. On the flip side, there are giant mountains of evidence for things like evolution.

We're not the ones making claims. The burden of evidence is on religion. So, yeah, you prove it first.

Not knocking his education, but most of his books were written for PHD historians and not a general public.

The God Delusion is an awesome book. And an easy read for a layperson.

Eh. I like both, I just enjoy Hitch's style more, when he talks about god. Besides, I'm a writer myself, so I like the fancy vocabulary. Tongue

I read it when it came out 8 years ago, so I may have some memory holes. I remember thinking it was a light read and quite entertaining. If you've hung around these here forums for a while and followed the various discussions that are available, it probably won't contain much absolutely mind-blowing that you haven't heard of before, but it's still fun.

I don't know about PhD historians, but he was insanely widely read and simply liked a bit of name-dropping and inside-jokey posturing. I've got an acquaintance who also comes from this communist leftie corner, is extremely literate, who likes to do the same thing on a smaller scale even in conversation.

It can rightly be said that Hitchens was the king of literary references. But remember, dear comrades, that such coronation is not without its own perils - as Tom Paine famously noted: though we have been wise enough to shut and lock a door against absolute Monarchy, we at the same time have been foolish enough to put the Crown in possession of the key. But was he, as rather questionable democrat Edward VIII once said of himself, truly the last king-emperor of atheist wit?
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
