Haven't read it and don't really care about Dawkins' opinions outside of evolutionary biology. From what I've seen of him, he doesn't really seem to have much of a grasp of philosophy and often conflates it with science. On top of that, he's got the whole pretentioius academic thing going on.
I mean, I like that he's out there calling bullshit bullshit, but he appears to over-reach into areas he's not entirely qualified.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

It's a very good book.
I'm not much of a fan of Prof. Dawkins, but there's no denying the qualities of his book.

And, since jesus = yahweh (or so the morons insist) that means it sums up ole jesus quite nicely, too.

The God Delusion is an awesome book. And an easy read for a layperson.
Agree; I have a hard time sticking with anything by Hitchens because of his style but I can fly through Dawkins' books with no problem. Of the two, Dawkins is my preferred author, as speakers I prefer Hitchens.

I like Ehrman's Lost Christianities which delves into all the different beliefs of the various churches in the first few centuries of Christianity.
I also liked Richard Carrier's Not The Impossible Faith, specifically chapter 17 when he goes into the history of ancient Judea and how Chrisitians makes all kinds of overreaching, bullshitty claims that aren't born out by historical sources about the time.
Overall impression of The God Delusion was that it was an easy read, went fast, and made some good points, even if they weren't the most sophisticated way of making those points.

Ah, I'm stuck about a third of the way through in NTIF, very interesting, but Pinker has priority currently...

Pinker. I loved The Stuff of Thought.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

I enjoyed The God Delusion more the second time I read it.
The first time I read it I was muttering "get to the damn point" for the first hundred or so pages.
The second time through I realized he was steadily building an argument and therefore got much more out of it.

^^-- I can see that. I thought the beginning was slow but enjoyed the second half, so my overall impression of the book was that it was a good read.
