Ya know, proving that there are bad monopolies does not prove that ALL monoploies are bad. Monopolies are generally a bad thing but if managed correctly they can be good for the consumer through the price benefits that economies of scale could provide were the company to pass them along to the consumer. The obvious problem is that it is much easier to simply keep those profits and price your product low enough to present a difficulty to competitors entering the market. A wise competing company would figure out some other way to differentiate their product.

There are good monopolies, but they are of a different variety than would be a corporation with 100% market share, as there is no reason for a monopoly to be managed correctly; there is however economic incentive for the said monopoly to be managed incorectly.

The company Walmart does just this. When they open a new store they sell their product form that store at a loss, something that none of the competition can do. Once the competition has gone out of buisness the Walmart store raises their prices back up.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

TBF,

Yeah, I've heard of that practice although it does smack of urban myth to me so I reject your claim. When Wal-Mart moved into McMinnville one thing they did, was hire literally six times the amount of workers that were needed to properly run the store. When you went into Wal-Mart it felt like you had your own personal shopper and after a few months they thinned the ranks down so now it is the regular amount of service you would expect from a large chain store.

One store that was driven out of business was the local craft store. That was the only one that had a direct effect on me and what I can tell you is the guy deserved to lose his business because he didn't react correctly when Wal-Mart moved in. He should have ran through the craft section and figured out what they didn't have and then sell those things as well as provide good advice to anyone that came into the store. The fact was that he was a prick and failed to build a relationship with the people over the years because he rested on the fact that he was the main craft store in town. He had a much better selection but was hard to deal with so I changed my buying practices and drove to Tammy's Hobbies in Beaverton for any specialty items that I needed.

The whole reason for the above anecdote is to illustrate that price isn't the only way to differentiate your business. Knowledgable sales staff is one way, as is selling higher quality merchandise, or a larger selection.

The practices of walmart are obviously not the most ethical.

Every business is run differently, and small businesses that build relationships with their customers do much better than those that don't; that is how the seven eleven store that sells the most coffee does it: people go to buy coffee in order to see the clerk that has worked there for a long time and knows everybody.

I am not one of the right-wing folks who says any and all big box stores are bad, I rather like the selection they bring, and the fact that they dont remember me, or what I have purchased, the next time I go in, but for any small business to compete with a big box store is impossible, and good customer relations only gets you so far.

When a big box store like wallmart moves into a small town that has only small business, it effectively has a monopoly, and takes advantage of it.
