Funerals and Weddings, a waste of money.

But by tradition it's the bride's father who foots the bill; so unless that's you, enjoy the ride (aka the bride) and cram as much of the buffet as you can fit into your pockets.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
What I understand about weddings is the wanting to celebrate your relationship with the people that you love so in that respect I get the party aspect of it. What I don't get is the cost sunk into the dress you wear for one day, the flowers that will die in two days, the decorations that you buy and then have to figure out what to do with later so you just pile it up and sell it at a garage sale when an "appropriate" amount of time has passed, etc.
I especially don't understand those "Get the Best Dress!" shows on TLC or whatever it's called. Women go and pick out a $5000 - $25,000 dress they literally wear once, and then what do you do with it? Nothing. Waste of money.

When I die, I want to be cremated. Either that or thrown into the sun. However, it won't matter once I die, because I won't know it occurred, and it's not like I'll rise if I'm not cremated in three days. Drop me in the ocean while you're on a cruise or throw me in the trash for all I care. Let other living creatures take care of my corpse.
The truth is absolute. Life forms are specks of specks (...) of specks of dust in the universe.
Why settle for normal, when you can be so much more? Why settle for something, when you can have everything? RE: Funerals and Weddings, a waste of money.

Many father-of-the-brides are rebelling here, or at least setting a more reasonable budget. Unfortunately the couple then takes out loans or bottoms out their savings on a wedding. It's an absurd waste of of money. I've been through a big wedding twice now. But times we threw a good party. But we did it without breaking the bank. The first reception was in my parent's back yard and Mom and I did the food in the weeks before. The second time my husband and I paid the bill. We picked an outdoor venue and spent the money on good food, but limited the bar to beer and wine. In both cases guested stayed late and went home grinning. Which is the point of a party. No? I can't imagine spending that on a dress, let alone a one occasion dress.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
My sis had a church wedding and a semi large reception, but I gotta hand it to her, she took a great deal of pride in doing everything on the cheap. She found a gown for $100 (I don't recall if it was a return or a cancellation). I was the DJ at the reception (free), we didn't decorate the hall we rented, just laid out the chairs and tables they had the way we wanted.
My sister even made the mints, she has the candy molds and the recipe is like powdered sugar, mint oil, food coloring she mixed herself to get the colors she wanted, and cream cheese. The rest of the food was organized by her friends a cousins, we put out a little money for some meat, but the rest of the food and the prep and clean up was all gifted. She ordered a cake from another cousin who has a sideline as a baker, and she only charged for ingredients for the sheet cakes, her present was the wedding cake and labor since we agreed to let her pick the design (she had one in her catalog she always wanted to do and no one had ever ordered that design). My sister liked the idea of a cake design that no one likely had ever seen before so she was fine. My sister dropped off the dye mix from the mints so the cake frosting matched. (we like cake and sweets, can you tell?) A friend of hers took all the pictures, risky I know, but they all turned out great. Another cousin let them borrow a classic restored car he owned for free, so no bill for a limo, and everyone remembers the car, it went way better than any limo could have. I was kinda proud of her, it didn't look like she scrimped at all, and no one could tell the difference. And then her husband dropped dead of a heart attack a couple years later. The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
It's an amazing day on Atheist forums, I just read a thread where A Theist and Deist Paladin were agreeing on everything and then come in here to find Brian37 saying something reasonable that I agree with. Wedding and funerals are indeed a waste of money. No need to spend thousands and stress out everyone to show you are in love or pay 100 times the material value of a casket. What a fucking waste.
I have never been married and my body is going to science.

A wedding is one day, it is the relationship after that that matters. Reality intervenes. The relationship afterwards won't be worth much if all that money is not sacrificed at the wedding. Come to think of it, relationship afterwards might not be worth much even if all that money is sacrificed at the wedding. |
