Also, european roads are fine, thank you... well, most are fine...
And the cars are enough to fit 5 people, plus some luggage... granted, we don't drive 1000miles to have dinner with the parents... 1000km signals the mark of taking a plane.  If parents want to have us for dinner, then they should live closer... as in same city... 50km away, tops! More than that and we're looking at spending the night.
Maximum speed allowed is 120km/h, so 1000km represents some 8 hours driving... not a healthy prospect.

I think the Tesla Model S could go against any Alfa, and is comparable to the Cayman and below on the Porsche line. To compare it to Supercars or Hypercars like Ferrari, Bugatti, or Lamborghini is a little tough.
Of course it doesn't have the history, but it is making history, and while it would cost a lot to have a charging station in your house, it would also cost you a lot to build a gas station at your house. There are charging stations popping up every day. I'm in small town Tennessee, and the Kohl's (dept store chain) here has 4 rapid charge stations in the parking lot. The more ubiquitous the fully electric car is, the more this will happen. The supercharging station is included with the top two models, and the regular charging is included with all models. So you can still do it at home.
Soon you'll be able to charge your car at work, at the shopping mall/stores, and at converted gas stations. All it takes is a super billionaire who can overcome the monetary influence of the oil companies.

Not my daily driver.

What do you guys thing of parking lots with nice roofs over the cars to provide shade.... and photovoltaic panels on top to provide some power to help "refuel" the electric cars.
Let's think about it a moment... a car's parking spot takes about 2mx5m (maybe it's a bit more in 'murica), that's 10m^2 of overhead solar panels... under optimum conditions we get 500W/m^2 of sun power... considering weather, inclination and latitude, we can play with about 200W/m^2 on average.
Then factor in the 10% efficiency of solar panels and we get, per parking spot, 200W.
The average person leaves the car parked while they're working for about 8 hours, so we're looking at 1600Wh of power delivered from the sun to your battery, free of charge....
1.6kWh isn't much...
Just for comparison, the car's battery will have, at least, 25kWh capacity... so the sun will be providing about 5% of the total recharging requirements.
It isn't much, but it certainly is something.
5% less in your yearly electricity bill is something noticeable.
But then you have the solar panel investment cost and maintenance costs... that may tun the project to the ground...

Cute little car. Mine held 8 passengers plus the driver, and luggage and a full size spare tire. Plus a ton of foot room (read as fighting room for the kids). Trips to Sam's Club were a dream in that baby. Shame about that motor though.

There is a tipping point that is inevitable. It is when is a sizeable enough portion of the population with electric cars exists such that building owners/space leasers want to appeal to business owners that employ the type of people who own electric cars. Same with retail spaces and quick charge points.
The reality is that most people only would use 5-10% of their total charge in their daily commute. Which would mean your fuel costs for work would be slim to none.
It's coming. It's just a matter of how long.

It's an electric car that does 0-60 in 3.2 secs and does 151 mph. It's no slouch.
I am ready for electric cars. I don't think the technology is 100% there yet, but it's fucking time.

Essentially mine is a car to be seen in.
Generally I find, I'd rather not be seen.
Hence, not the daily driver.
It is 10 years old now and has just over 3000 miles on it.

In my area, 2yr olds are going for ~$15K with 10 to 30K miles on them.
My chief reasons for buying now are:
Low maintenance: I've cared for cars for 40 years. I'm sick of it and the mfr engineers are making it harder every year[/paranoia].
Economy: kwH prices are cheap compared to gas
Ecology: I doubt I will make a detectable difference in carbon emissions, but cycle efficiencies for steam power plants are reaching 60% vs half that for ICEs so I am on the side of the angels and can feel better for it.
It also gives me a rationalization to go blasting around every so often in the Cobra.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat?
