Apparently it does not automatically detect the mobile and requires user interaction. Once in mobile mode, my laptop is now in mobile mode and no menu access to the CP or themes. I had to go to my history on my iphone to get back to the CP and change the theme back.

The standard theme still has the annoying white background on either side but I can live with that.

I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
