Different, yes, but not entirely. The consequences of both are violence in the name of a deity. Let's not forget that when unfettered by secular humanistic values, Christianity was just as barbaric as Islam is today.

God is obviously a sadist. Christians are not much better.
Muslims are just something to hate (the communists of our time) They are no better or worse than christians.

For one, most of the secularists throughout the Enlightenment were raised in the Church, so many of their values were shaped by principles they had been taught as children.
