We are not talking about surgery; we're not talking about a sex change, per se. What we're talking about is hormone blockers that have been proven to, not only give a child who identifies as a different sex the time to figure out if what they're feeling is what they really think is best for them, but also give them a much smaller chance of committing suicide eventually! I don't understand why this is so hard to grasp.

Despite what Rebbeca thinks, I'm not a doctor, but I cannot imagine that postponing puberty beyond its natural timing is without consequences. Could be wrong.

To my mind, it seems pretty extreme and should be unnecessary to take very profound drugs and major surgeries just to fit in with societies expectations. I would think the better approach, personally and as a society, is to work towards a culture that treats biological sex the same way it does height or shoe size. And the way it should, but doesn't yet, treat skin color.

Ok, listen, this has nothing to do with society and how it perceives gender roles, it has nothing to do with denial, it has nothing to do with wanting to do activities perceived to be of the opposite sex, it has nothing to do with whims or phases

This is an actual, diagnosed psychiatric conditions and it's about feeling with every fibre of your body that you are meant to be someone else and it's visible from such an early age as three years old

Show me a case of a transgendered person changing their mind and not their body and living happily with it

And for the hundredth time, in this case no one is talking about surgery yet, just delaying puberty to help the child make a more informed decision

And about the ill effects, don't you think the drugs were prescribed by a doctor? You know, one of the people who know their shit?

No one is born the wrong sex. You're either XX or XY. A person's sex is a fixed biological fact.

If you're going to try and be scientific about it then at least be correct.

After mulling this case over (not that my opinion matters!) I am coming down on the side of delaying puberty. It seems the case has been properly diagnosed and this is the most rational way of dealing with it, postponing the decision. It's kind of a compromise between taking action and being careful not to let a child make a big decision they may regret.

I don't know what the side effects of doing this may be, but I doubt they would be worse than the dangers of doing nothing, or hasty surgery.

What if the child develops a desire to be a male? What would the long term effects of the anti puberty drug have on his development?

She'll be smaller in stature. But she'd go through puberty just the same. And will no ill effects on her reproductive ability.

Being smaller in stature isn't nothing.  Men are judged by height, among other things.  In the phrase, "tall, dark, and handsome," "tall" comes first.

So, what we are talking about is something that has significant permanent effects.  The child better not change his or her mind, or he or she will suffer for it.

If there were no measures taken, the risk of the child committing suicide would be much higher. I think when compared to killing yourself, having a smaller stature isn't that bad after all
