If everyone around the child continued to profess belief in Santa, never told them it was made up, and berated them for even asking questions about how it makes sense, and went on about how disbelief would be punished: then the child may well carry on believing.

Yes. One year I slept behind the couch to try to catch him. Being probably 4 years old, my parents didn't have a problem putting out the presents without waking me.
