Hindu vigilantes storm Muslim meat shop in India’s Maharashtra state

Tensions have flared in the Indian state of Maharashtra after members of the Hindu nationalist group Bajrang Dal raided a Muslim-owned meat shop, accusing the owner of selling beef.

The incident took place on Friday 17 October in the Baizpur area of Akola city, where witnesses said a group of Hindu men stormed into the shop shouting anti-Muslim slogans and verbally abusing the owner.

“They came in shouting, calling him a beef seller, abusing him,” said local resident Mohammed Salim. “When we tried to stop them, they began provoking people. It looked planned.”

Police said there was no major violence and that officers quickly brought the situation under control. “A small crowd gathered and some slogans were shouted,” said Inspector Rajesh Patel. “The situation was resolved peacefully,” he added.

Local Congress MLA Sajid Khan Pathan accused right-wing groups of deliberately inflaming tensions. “This is not the first time such an incident has happened in Akola,” he said.

Muslim shops, houses vandalized in Gujarat after VHP leader’s hate post



According to Kashmir Media Service, the unrest erupted when a local VHP leader, Hitesh Banker, circulated a hate-filled post urging Hindus to “teach Muslims a lesson” following a message that read “I Love Muhammad (SAW)” shared by another user.

Eyewitnesses said mobs armed with sticks and stones rampaged through the streets late at night, pelting stones and torching shops and homes—belonging to members of the Muslim community.

Officials confirmed that nearly 100 suspects were identified and around 80 people arrested for rioting, arson, and disturbing public order.

Former BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has sparked controversy with her remarks at a religious event in Bhopal, where she urged parents to take harsh measures against daughters who choose to visit the houses of "non-Hindus," even saying they should "break the legs" of daughters who do not obey and "follow our values."

"If our girl tries to go to a non-Hindu man, do not spare breaking her legs. Because someone who does not follow our values, who does not listen, must be disciplined," she said.

Thakur further urged parents to physically punish their daughters, claiming it was for their own better future.

"If, for the good of your child, you have to beat them, do not hold back - when parents chastise children, they do so for a better future, not to tear them to pieces. When a daughter is born, mothers rejoice and say Lakshmi has come into the house; everyone congratulates them. But when she grows up, she goes off to become someone’s wife (of another faith)," she said.

"Strengthen your mind, and make it so strong that if our daughter does not obey us, if she goes to a non-Hindu's house, leave no stone unturned in considering breaking her legs. Those who do not obey the values and do not listen to their parents must be punished. If you have to beat your children for their well-being, do not step back."

Three Muslims sentenced to life under Gujarat cow-protection law

A sessions court in Amreli district on Tuesday convicted three Muslim men of cow slaughter under the Gujarat Animal Preservation Act, sentencing them to life imprisonment and imposing a collective fine of more than ₹18 lakh.

The Gujarat Animal Preservation Act prohibits the slaughter of any animal belonging to the cow progeny in the state.

The case dates back to November 6, 2023, when Amreli police, acting on a tip-off, raided a house in Baharpara, Khatkivad area of Amreli town.

Investigators reportedly found evidence of cow slaughter and recovered meat from the premises. A veterinary doctor and a forensic team later confirmed that the seized meat was of cow origin.

The government’s statement emphasised that “Gaumata is a centre of Indian culture and faith,” adding that Gujarat would show “no mercy” in such offences.

Under BJP rule, more than 20 states, most of them governed by the Hindutva party, have amended cow-protection laws to impose harsher penalties, including life imprisonment, fines of up to ₹5 lakh, and bans on beef possession and sale.

In Maharashtra, for instance, a 2015 amendment prohibited the slaughter of cows, bulls, and bullocks, and made possession of beef punishable with up to five years in jail.

Gujarat amended its law the same year to equate cow slaughter with murder, enabling courts to impose life sentences, while Assam’s 2021 law banned the sale of beef near temples and in predominantly non-beef-eating areas, disproportionately affecting Muslim vendors.

As hate spirals in India, Hindu extremists turn to Christian targets

On Christmas Eve, Hindu hardline groups affiliated with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a shutdown in the central Indian city of Raipur. The protest was called over allegations of “forced” religious conversions by Christians, a claim frequently levelled against the Christian community despite scant evidence.

That same day, groups of men armed with wooden sticks stormed a shopping mall in Raipur, vandalising Christmas decorations and disrupting celebrations. Police filed a case against 30 to 40 unidentified attackers, but arrested only six. They were released on bail within days and, upon their release, were greeted with public processions, garlands, and chants outside the jail, videos of which circulated widely on social media.

The research by India Hate Lab, a project of the Washington, DC-based Center for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH), has found that the country recorded a total of 1,318 hate speech events in 2025, an average of more than three per day.

These events, organised and led largely by Hindu majoritarian groups as well as the governing BJP, targeted Muslims and Christians, marking a 97 percent increase in hate speech since 2023, and a 13 percent rise over 2024. While Muslims remained a primary target, the report found a sharp rise in anti-Christian rhetoric. Hate speech events targeting Christians rose from 115 in 2024 to 162 in 2025, a 41 percent increase.

This was borne out in the violence and intimidation unleashed by Hindu supremacists on Christmas celebrations last month. Instances were recorded across India, in the capital state of Delhi, as well as the states of Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh. Raipur, where the mob ravaged the mall, is the capital of Chhattisgarh.

In Madhya Pradesh, a leader from Modi’s BJP led a mob that disrupted and attacked a Christmas lunch for visually impaired children. In Delhi, women wearing Santa caps were intimidated by Hindu supremacists. In Kerala, some schools reportedly received threats from officials belonging to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) – the parent organisation of the BJP and many other Hindu majoritarian groups – warning against holding Christmas celebrations, prompting the local government to announce a probe into the matter. This came after an RSS worker attacked teenage carollers in the same state.

At a Holi celebration hosted by former BJP MLA Sangeet Som in Meerut, dozens of young men beelined toward two women standing in a corner: Shradha Rajput and Sandhya Rajput. The women, who belong to Hindu Raksha Dal, have emerged as local heroines since scrawling anti-Muslim graffiti on a crash barrier along the Uttarakhand-Delhi highway. Their act has catapulted them into becoming new Hindutva icons — and they are relishing it.

“These men want to join us. We all have the same target — Muslims. And our goal is to protect our mothers and sisters from ‘love jihad’,” said 35-year-old Shradha, with a newfound flair in her demeanour. “These young men feel more confident now.”

Shradha and Sandhya filmed themselves spray-painting “Musalmano ke liye yeh sadak nahi hai (This road is not for Muslims)” on the highway on the night of 26 February and posted a 17-second reel boasting about it, with chants of “Jai Shri Ram.” An FIR has been registered against them, but the women say it is “like a jewel in our crown”.

For the new female faces of an aggressive Hindutva cause, life is suddenly hectic. One day they are spray-painting the public infrastructure; the next, they are off “rescuing” Hindu women. Right now, their mission involves rescuing a Hindu woman from her Muslim boyfriend in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur.

They joined Hindu Raksha Dal in 2024, five years after its emergence as a self-styled vigilante outfit. They wholeheartedly support the organisation’s campaigns: reclaiming temples and ‘protecting’ cows, movements that gained momentum following the 2019 Ayodhya verdict. The group claims to be bolder and more aggressive than the Bajrang Dal, and says it has built a network of over 50,000 members across India.

For the women, their newfound popularity has further emboldened them. Their WhatsApp and Instagram accounts now beep constantly with congratulatory messages. “Aapne bahut dileri ka kaam kiya hai (You have done a brave job),” read one message.

With each young man they met at the BJP leader’s Holi party, they recounted their acts of “bravery”: distributing sticks to one lakh Hindus in Uttarakhand, vandalising a dargah, and claiming to have “saved” 30 women from so-called ‘love jihad’ in Uttarakhand.

Their days revolve around making frantic calls to volunteers, asking them to track areas where Hindus and Muslims live side by side, or where there are Muslim-owned shops. They refer to these places as “target areas”. They are constantly on social media, monitoring online activity of Muslims.

These days, the women say they are “fighting for justice” for a Gujjar ‘girl’ from Saharanpur they claim ran away with a Muslim ‘boy’ on 24 February. They allege that the Hindu girl has been trapped and brainwashed, and insist she must be “rescued.” The young woman, meanwhile, posted a video on social media stating that she was not a minor and had left home of her own free will.

“I am an adult and I came on my own,” she said in the video, dismissing allegations of coercion.

As news spread, Hindu groups convened a panchayat in the village. Shardha and Sandhya were part of it. It was there that it was decided the house of the Muslim man should be bulldozed and the woman “returned” to her community.
