RE: Marijuana
I think someone said here that you can get bad marijuana though? I think I heard like at least what you are given can have stuff in it that's bad for you. Messed up bad marijuana...

'Bad' pot simply means it's THC level is so low the desired effects cannot be achieved no matter the amount smoked.

Because of some bad cases when crap was put in it that shouldn't be?

Like herbicides. Some governments used to spray a potent herbicide on crops found instead of cut and burning. Some of these crops still went to market and made many people very very sick.
That was a long, long time ago and how the stories go anyway, never had first hand experiances or known people who did. I suspect they may be just urban legend stories.

Alcohol, on the other hand has got redeeming features, it is a 'food' in a sense and if taken in moderation can benefit digestion etc.

Alcohol is not a food. Many of the same benefits derived from it's use can be aquired by drinking grape juice.

Allow me clue you in on a few benefits of marijuana use......

Alleviates pain and often allows for a reduction of opiate use in people suffering from herniated discs, arthritis, either Rheumatoid or osteo, pain that is the result as a result of traumatic injury, migraines and Fibromyalgia to name just a few.
Stimulates appetite and relieves cachexia (physical wasting) in patients with AIDS , Hepatitis C and cancer.
Relieves neuropathic pain from peripheral neuropathy (in people with diabetes or side effects from chemotherapy, radiculopathy, phantom limb syndrome and, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy.
Alleviates nausea and vomiting associated with cancer, HIV and Hepatitis-C chemotherapy.
Decreases intra-ocular pressure in those with diagnosed glaucoma.
Decreases muscle spasm as experienced with Multiple Sclerosis, paralysis (paraplegia/quadriplegia), and cerebral palsy.
Sleep Aid for those who suffer from insomnia –including if it is from pain or side effect of medication.
Alleviates Migraine headaches.

Although smoking marijuana has not been linked to lung cancer, smoking it can result in respiratory harm, such as bronchitis. Many researchers agree that marijuana smoke contains known carcinogens, and that smoking marijuana may increase the risk of respiratory diseases, along with cancer of the lungs, throat, and mouth. Vaporizers and edible marijuana products may substantially reduce many of the potentially harmful smoke toxins that are normally present in marijuana smoke.

Symptoms of marijuana overdose include: nausea, vomiting, heart rhythm disturbances, numbness in the limbs, hacking cough. Can you tell me the symptoms of alcohol overdose? Here, let me list some for you;
Poor or absent reflexes, unconsciousness (passing out), seizures, unpredictable highly changeable behavior, incoherent speech, constant and heavy vomiting, slow shallow irregular breathing and.......death.

Chronic marijuana overuse can lead to laryngitis, bronchitis and general apathy.

Chronic alcohol overuse can lead to;
Jaundice
Rosacea, Seborrheic Dermatitis
Parotid Swelling
Finger Clubbing
Rhinophyma
Dyspepsia
Nausea & Vomiting
Recurrent Diarrhea
Recurrent Abdominal Pain
Acute & Chronic Pancreatitis
Hypoglycemia & Hyperglycemia
Gastrointestinal Bleeding
Alcohol fatty liver
Alcoholic hepatitis - Syndrome of necrosis (cell death)
Cirrhosis
Ascites
Irregularity in heartbeat
Cardiomyopathy - Otherwise known as heart disease
Chronic shortness of breath and signs of congestive heart failure.
Anemia
Dilation of Blood Vessels
Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease (COAD)
Recurrent Chest Infection and Pneumonia
Blackouts
Seizures
Peripheral Neuropathy (nerve disease)

I'm well aware of what chronic overuse of alcohol can lead to. My mother is an alcoholic. The possible 'benefits' of marijuana to people like my father who suffers from MS, I am also aware of. The drugs that he is prescribed help him to deal with his symptoms and pain. In a situation where you are suffering or dying, then using drugs isn't really going to have the same bearing. For a young person whose brain is still developing to be taking marijuana even once a week, may be enough to do lasting damage. At the end of the day, you do what you feel comfortable with. If you want to smoke it or eat it, then that's up to you.

RE: Marijuana
Agreed CR. I was responding to your claims of wine being a 'food' and making a stand for it's physical benefits while condemning pot. It's your biased comparison of the two I was taking issue with. The discussion wasn't about the effects of these substances on young, still developing brains.

If you now are of the opinion "you do what you feel comfortable with. If you want to smoke it or eat it, then that's up to you" then why just a few posts ago were you proclaiming you were "glad" it is an illegal substance to possess? And you were berating your ex for smoking it and at the same time giving the impression you approve of alcohol use. That is what I was taking issue with.

It's like saying "Don't eat butter because it will clog your arteries!" as you munch on a bag of greasy french fries and say "well, these are O.K. in moderation". (and those fries are what gave your sister cogenitive heart disease.)

If you wish to support the illegality of pot, because of detrimental effects, then I ask for a bit of intellectual honesty and consistancy and support any anti-alcohol movements in your area. Can you or anyone else deny the detrimental effects of alcohol far outweigh those of marijuana?

Unless you want to count apathy. Apathy can be a real buzz kill.

I definitely shouldn't smoke any then! My short term memory is bad enough already.

Oh I was going to say something about pot. I forgot what I was going to say. Oh...its on the tip of my tongue (or rather keyboard/fingers, whatever)....

Dotard, you said: ''If you now are of the opinion "you do what you feel comfortable with. I'm not sure why there is anything to take issue with here. I'm saying that if you or anyone else wants to partake of marijuana then that is obviously fine for you. You don't think it is harmful and I can understand this as I've smoked a few joints myself many years ago and it was a pleasant enough experience. I on the other hand DO think even in small amounts, it is harmful hence why I'm glad it's illegal. I accept that alcohol ABUSE is more harmful and widespread than marijuana abuse. Any fool can see that. We live in a society where alcohol has taken on an importance if you like that is not good for us. There are campaigns at the minute trying to educate people about the harmful effects of drinking too much. How can we solve the problem of alcohol abuse without banning it, is a hard one. I was adding my two penn'th if you like, having had a bad first encounter with the stuff and reading articles about the health risks has certainly put me off it.

RE: Marijuana
I say ban alcohol. You say you THINK marijuana is harmful even in small amounts yet you just said you smoked it a few times and it was a 'pleasant experiance'. You smoked a small amount, no harm done, correct? But then you say you had a bad first encounter with it. What was that bad first encounter? Your ex? That wasn't a bad encounter with pot, that was a bad encounter with a bad person.

It just P's me O that folks can take such a stance against pot and then go on to talk about how can we solve the HORRIFIC problems of alcohol use while keeping it legal and widely available. Alcohol USE is more harmful than marijuana ABUSE if you look at the info available to us.

You admitted you have first hand experiance with the devastation alcohol can bring and you were aware of the positive benefits of marijuana use. So I don't understand how you can maintain your stance against marijuana and not take the same stance with a substance much, much more harmful. Could it be you are a regular alcohol user? I don't know.

Just think if it were required that all leaders of all countries smoke a joint before meeting. Their differances are great and one says "Ah... were going to have to go to war over this!". The other says "Well, hell, that would mean we would have to get up, go over there and push a bunch of buttons and do a boatload of paperwork." First one replies "Yeah, fu*k it, nevermind, pass that joint please."

Ok, that was silly yes, but it makes a point.
