Irony is tricky for me, but there seems to be no indication the man wasn't wearing a helmet when he was hit and it is still illegal in his state not to wear one. If he was wearing one and it didn't save his life, what does the irony meter do then?

It shows helmets hold a grudge. Don't diss them and expect they will come to your aid.
