but don't derail people's intro threads with your alcoholic shenanigans, pls

The OP specifically stated that he drank his rum straight.  I am being totally respectful of that.  Because he is obviously not some sissy who waters down his drinks, what's not to respect?  We are just extending the conversation about alcohol.  And I really do want to know about his favorite rum.  If I can get it locally for something less than an insane price, I will very likely try it myself.  If I hate it, then the disrespect may come, but so far, I am totally onboard with his idea of drinking rum straight.  I don't want to see any foolishness criticizing that, and I assure you, nothing I have said thus far is intended in any way as a criticism of Captain Monkeyshines.  (Which, by the way, is a pretty good name.)  Have some rum, and it will all be good.  One liter will be enough to see that Captain Monkeyshines is onto something with real possibilities.

Derailed?  Sounding more like its on track....maybe running a bit ahead of shedyool.

Respecting the drinks.   MMMmmmm.  Lessee

Our usual rum (when I say our I mean my wife and I -  she drinks it straight up to) is simple old Captain Morgan's Private Stock.  It's relatively inexpensive (and I tend to be a cheap bastard anyway) and goes well with a campfire They had one  that was called 1671 (maybe it was 1871), it was the bomb -  sadly I haven't found it again.  Rum is a recent enjoyment of just a few years so I haven't gotten around to trying many.

Sailor Jerry's was Ok but the Caps is better, and the Caps Private Stock is better than any of the other Morgan varieties.  I am open to suggestions.

Other drinks: I'm not a fan of beers, champagne is ok but I get all burpy from it.  Wine is for supper, just a glass or three depending on the next days work shedyool.  It's usually a Rex Goliath Cabernet or an Old Vine Zin from Gnarly Head.  We don't drink expensive wines - just stuff we like the taste of - usually Cabernets or Pinot Noirs.  Then there is the occasional shot of Tequila.  We have Hornito's on hand right now, but it's not as smooth as Patron...
Then there's the mixed drinks, a good Snakebite for a dessert, or a white russian.  Margaritas are fun but I can't do all the salt on the glass.  I mix my own brand of Iced Tea, sort of like a Long Island.  I call it a Carlton Ice Tea (town in PA I used to live) it uses Lipton tea for the base, with some whiskey sours and margarita mix along with the usual shots of rum. tequila, triple sec, and vodka.......oooh, Vodka, we use Rain, the bottle is shaped like a big rain drop - it's yummy in its own right.   I also dig a good glass of Port with some nice dark chocolate.

You know, reading this makes me sound like I have a drinking problem.......good thing drinking's not a sin....

Cheers to you Elf!

Iroscato: Some of my family members know, some don't know at all. Since religion, God, gods, church, etc doesn't come up in our conversations (religion was more in your face until my teen years - after that it fell by the wayside to the point that a persons viewpoints only come up at funerals, weddings and Christmas). The dynamic is that we are individuals that make our own choices and live with said choices. Well that's Moms side at least. Dad's side would be more fervent and probably get all dis-owny about things. They don't need to know, he doesn't need to know. He's old, He doesn't need the stress and I don't want the strife.

Close friends know - we can have great conversations with them - some of whom are religious, some are more "spiritual" than Christian types, and some are atheist also. It's a great group of people to hang with.

It's funny, my wife and I were sitting, watching TV several years ago. We had many conversations before this on God, belief, science etc. She said something to the effect of: "I have something to tell you" Scary words for any man to hear, but she said "I think I'm an atheist".......I paused and went "whew! I think I am too" and this resulted in many more deep conversations on religion, God, and beliefs. We've actually traveled this road of changes together she and I. My constant companion, I couldn't ask for a better person to spend my time with, to converse with, to fish and camp with, and to travel those unknown roads with. S

I hear ya Captain M.  Being the only nonbeliever in a Christian family is tough.  My sister and I usually butt heads on the subject of religion.  Most times we don't talk about religion, sometimes we can agree on a few things.  But she is a Conservative Christian.  She and most of my dad's side of the family are conservative on social and political issues, FOX News (LOL) watching, liberal/progressive dissing type of folks.  I don't go to family reunions anymore and I try to avoid seeing many of them.  I am tired of coming home angry.  At least my niece and her husband seem cool, we never talked about religion.

You are lucky man that your wife is also an atheist.  Dated a few gals in the day, most were religious, but we had fun nonetheless.
