Why Christians can't respect other's opinion?

RE: Why Christians can't respect other's opinion?
My TLBig GrinR rant broken down.

1. They don't care or love you. (they only want brownie points)
2. Once you are on of them they don't give a shit about you
3. If you are of a different religion they get pushy
4. If you are atheist... they seem to "blow" the fuck up.
Atheism is a non-prophet organization join today.

Btw, I fail miserably at this plenty of times. Above is just what I believe I should try to do, not how I always act, unfortunately.

Cath-y, I wonder how much it matters to you that there is a god in charge, judgement and all that in terms of how you treat people.  Do you think you'd give up your practical philosophy if you became disenchanted with the dogma?  I don't think you would.  Why would you?

Being a Catholic and learning about the teachings of Jesus has taught me a lot and helped shape who I am and my principles. If I were to turn into an Atheist tomorrow, I don't think a life time of being taught these basic principles would go out the window. So no, I don't see it changing my practical philosophy.

With that being said, we all try to follow the examples of people who we believe are good people (well, most of us anyway). When you have someone to look up to and try to emulate (whether it's Jesus, your Mother, a good Mentor, etc), it certainly helps.

But again, helps being the key word there. Doesn't mean my philosophy would change, but perhaps I would be worse at it if I didn't have Jesus as an example to follow.

Now if you're asking whether I try to act in a way I believe is good simply for the sake of not going to Hell, the answer is NO, lol.

I get the impression that a lot of Atheists assume that us Christians are constantly consumed with worry about Hell. And perhaps some of them are, though that has not been my personal experience, nor what I have seen from my fellow Christian friends and family.

The thought of Hell, honestly, seldom crosses my mind when I'm just going about my day and interacting with people. Much to the contrary, I was always taught that having this fixation on Hell is not healthy and should be avoided, and using it as the motive for doing good is not a good way to go about it and can only take you so far anyway.

"Why is it some people can't respect the opinions of others?"

And you know there are plenty of we atheists who aren't all that respectful of people who don't share our opinions.  But more broadly, why should that be?  What assumptions do people share who disrespect the opinions of others, regardless of religious status?

Sometimes it seems to come down to a lack of respect for the other person's right to choose for themselves.  This sucks hairy balls when preachy apologists come around proselytizing.  But when we assume the beliefs of theists are mistaken regardless of their motivations in holding them, aren't we being just as arrogant?  I know I hate it when I'm told what an atheist believes by someone who isn't one.  Wouldn't want to make the same mistake in reverse.  It really is a question of respect for the autonomy of others to choose for themselves based on their life experience.

Okay, I'll give up the soap box now to the next blow hard.

You don't know how much I appreciate you saying this, and I don't know how to adequately thank you. Shy

What you describe above is something I've observed and have been trying to figure out how best to present it here. Thank you for doing it for me!

...... they do it cos they think it gets them brownie points with their sky daddy. self interest, no shits given.

Vic, you know I love ya, but with all respect, this is exactly what Whateverist was talking about.

Who are we to tell someone else "No, you're not doing it for the reason you say. You're actually doing it for this other reason."

Just some food for thought. Shy
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Indeed, who -are- you for saying such a thing?  Can I expect you and your fellow christers to stop doing that anytime soon?

I'm not sure what you are referring to rhythm. Can you elaborate?

Oh, you know me, it's just my fallen nature speaking.  That's why I'm so snarky, has something to do with apples, and nothing to do with your -entirely- unintentional irony.   Tongue

We can both accept, I would hope, that your religion makes implications and statements regarding the reasons that I, for example, might do something......that are completely divorced from the reasons that I would give you. Further, that you, personally, hold such opinions (as do I about your church, you, and any other tom dick or harry) as well.

Everyone, Christians included gives them a wide berth.   They are rather obviously crazy.
