I had been an atheist for a while, and wanted to talk more about religion than what was on a little subforum for something else.

I started off on a Christian forum as I find them interesting, and was curious why they believed such strange things.

I got frustrated with their arguments as they all seemed to end up as A equals B and A does not equal B at the same time. So I came here.

I actually got kicked off a Christian BB once for comparing someone to a Pharisee and that Jesus himself would condemn them and cited Matthew 23.  I am a Christian, that is to say a believer and follower of Christ, but I too cannot stand arrogant religious bigots and hypocrites.
We are not made happy by what we acquire but by what we appreciate.

Balance. Here, I have the option of engaging in conversation with sane, reasonable people. Most of my family and friends are religious, many to the point of being nauseating. Between them and the few, but very vocal Bible-thumpers I have to interact with at work, I frequently feel as if I'm drowning in a sea of babbling nonsense. It's been really nice to be able to visit this forum and learn from people who understand and accept reality.

For communication with Atheists.  I live in atheist hell and it is difficult at best to engage in conversation that does not include "Praise the lord", "Amen", "Thank god", "god bless you" or any such nonsense.  I am supposed to tolerate that crap, but the courtesy is not reciprocated.

The atheists do not always agree with my stance or ideas, but they are, for the most part, respectful.

When I came here i was still learning about being an atheist really, as I had only stopped being a Christian a few months before. So I came, enjoyed the banter and what not. Now I really don't give a fuck about Christians and the like but I like everyone enjoy a diverse and intelligent (mostly) community. Due in no small way to the fact that the mods here do a good job mostly. though I still miss that angry German fucker for those that remember him. He was before Alex ks time I believe

For myself, I guess I was wondering what were other peoples reasons for being atheist or having thoughtful positions about religion.  What keeps me coming back is both the wit and company of many other posters -and- the opportunity to encourage theists toward more reasonable positions.  I often feel that there is much worthwhile in what they get out of god belief but that they hamstring themselves with particular notions of gods which are untenable.  Other than afterlife bullshit I think they can keep much of what they seem to like about it without swallowing so much cognitive dissonance.
