TC Wrote:And no i honestly do not believe (and i will get a lot of flame for this) that atheists are as giving as theists simply because the code of conduct that theists use considers giving to others a real virtue that should be encouraged. And yes this is partly done because of a fear of God, but if it helps the world become a better place...

How dare you say make such generalisations, is there honestly one good thing that a religious person has done in the name of their religion, that someone who was not religious could not do also?

Name one!

Then lets try the inverse think of a bad thing that someone has done in the name of their religion, perhaps?

I told you id get a lot of flame for this Smile

It is not a generalization it is logic. I never said all christians are giving and all atheists are not, i just said that religious people are more enclined to engage in charity because of their beliefs. Dont trying to box me into a little overgeneralizing jackass, and actually think about what i am saying.

I apologise if I was rude, but can you please answer my questions?

I'm glad you said that because whenever some Fundie tells me that the US was founded on "christian values" I feel compelled to point out the the Enlightenment, which was a rejection of xtian values was what led to the "all men are created equal" idea. Xtianity, as you so rightly note, gave us "The Divine Right of Kings."

I AM NOT CHERRY PICKING

It seems impossible for me to get my points across because im sure many have already decided that i am cherry picking my beliefs. I am not. I reject the Old Testament and accept the New Testament. Thats as simple as that. Why ? because the Old Testament is easily read as a mythology book with a scary God, while the new Testament has a message of love and peace and the Gospels depict a believable story.

What you are saying is not true. Atheists, in my experience, are generally quite concerned about the welfare of their fellow man. The difference is that religion is organized and atheists are not. There are very few charitable organizations that are definable as 'atheist' compared to multitudes of them organized by a church. As individuals, atheists can be just as, if not more, charitable than Christians, but you don't see large gatherings of atheists, because... well... atheism is not a religion.

WRONG that IS cherry picking. Jesus himself (supposidly) said to follow the old law (IE OLD TEST) you need to reread Matthew.. ill narrow it down for ya... MAT 5 17:18... or even TIM 3 16....so NO you cant throw out the OT..
Did I make a good point? thumbs up Smile I cant help it I'm a Kudos whore. P.S. Jesus is a MYTH.

Well, I think you are - but it is way better than being a fundie.
I agree, that there are some values in the NT that we still consider 'good' but also some we consider 'bad'. Also I completely disagree on the Gospels - it is highly likely that also the NT is only a compendium of more or less nice stories collected over the years. It is also very unlikely that someone similar to Jesus actually existed.

Um. That's Marcionism. He was denounced as a heretic by the other True Christians of his day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcionism

Quote:Marcion believed Jesus Christ was the savior sent by God and Paul of Tarsus was his chief apostle, but he rejected the Hebrew Bible and Yahweh. Marcionists believed that the wrathful Hebrew God was a separate and lower entity than the all-forgiving God of the New Testament.

But fear not, they stopped burning heretics at the stake a little while ago in historical terms.

Alright, off course people will do good no matter their beliefs, but religious people are much more inclined to do so. And name ONE thing that religious people do in the name of religion that no one else would do in the name of otehr causes. Genocide ? Eastern Europe, Rwanda or Sri Lanka (ethnic genocides). Pedophilia ? the vast majority of pedophilia is done by parents. Wars ? many many wars have been done without religion being involved.
