And there are exemptions if some link actually contributes to the discussion. Simply posting a vid without any explanation doesn't cut it however.

I think the rule is a bit weird, too, particularly given that there is an exception specified, but the exception is not consistently allowed.  I posted about this issue long ago:

30/30 Rule

What I did, after being here a couple of weeks, and finding that the exception specified in the rules was not actually always allowed in practice, was to go away for a couple of weeks and come back again after the 30 days passed.  I did not like not being allowed to post links, since many times discussions involve people wanting sources, and being new, I was getting into trouble trying to comply with such reasonable requests.

In my opinion, this is the worst thing about this site.  But, not owning this site, my opinion on the matter counts for nothing.  My guess is, this is one of the reasons why some new members do not stick around, as it is an annoyance to not be able to properly participate in discussions in which people want sources for claims that are made.

Oh, jesus effing crisp. If you can't see that the 30/30 rule is applied to those spamming, I don't know what else to tell you.

If a link is a citation, it's going to be allowed; if it's there to promote yourself, we won't allow it before the 30/30. Even then, it's annoying as fuck because we're a discussion forum, not a forum in which everyone can promote their own shit. We aren't in the business of directing people to other sites.

The OP spammed a bunch of people via PM and on the board by promoting his own shit. He can wait it out and become an upstanding member, as have a lot of people here. If he chooses not to, he won't be allowed to promote his brand. It's really simple.

Is it up to the mods to determine whose links are trustworthy or not?

It isn't about trustworthy sites or untrustworthy sites (though posting Trojan sites is against the rules too), it's about prohibiting coming to this site for self promotion only.  This isn't a place to come to promote your book, blog, video, video blog, or any other product.

But someone could make an account, wait 30 days and THEN start to promote their work, what use is the 30 day rule then?

Correct!
not that you can start your online shop here either once you are eligible!
This isn't a commerce site!

Yes, people can do that.  But, dependent on the content of their site, they could soon find their account terminated.

But, as Ignoramus said, we're not a commercial site

Why not terminate their account within the first 30 days if they spam? Why wait till they're full members?

Sorry for all the questions!

They could, but in practice, they almost never do.
