I use Linux and Windows 7 but the latter has a 'reserve your copy of windows 10' icon hanging menacingly around in the corner. I hope I never click on it accidentally I went out of my way to get Windows 7 recently but that's as far up as I'm willing to go with Microsoft. Once they stop supporting it it's back to Linux full time for me.

I thought I would update to Windows 10 on my laptop and I clicked on the icon but it can't actually upgrade. A bit of googling suggests it might be because I have dual boot with Linux and the Grub menu is stopping Windows from updating. Now that news has come out about their privacy policy and how Microsoft might want to start demanding a monthly subscription I figure I'll just stick with Windows 7.
Apparently you can get rid of the upgrade icon but I would need to find out how again. I did read the instructions for doing so though.
I only keep Windows in case I need compatibility with any program.

Have you tried VLC?

I'm not sure I understand. One online video rental/streaming service we use for example always required MS silverlight and did not accept the linux alternative to that. I don't know how I should stream those contents to vlc.

Hmmm, I have the same constellation... I wonder whether it would work at all then.
But a monthly fee for an operating system is a preposterous insult. I hope they choke on it if they are serious about it.

Yep, outside of support fees for enterprise customers, I can't see how that's going to be a popular decision if that's what they decide to do (and they definitely appear to be keeping their options open). I'll ditch Windows in a heartbeat if they do.

I don't think they'll do that ... They 'll make plenty renting the Office.
PS, if anyone is using Oracles Virtualbox, you'll need to use an older version (3.12) or the latest ver 5.? from their website (still beta but stable)
Nothing in between works ...

The mail app in windows 10 is broken for me. It worked fine in windows 8, automatically linked all the settings when I transferred my profile across now suddenly all I get is error codes. I can't alter the settings and as it's the account I have linked to my profile it won't let me delete and start again. By not letting me tinker windows have managed to break an app that used to work perfectly well.

Did you change to a local account? That broke it for me.
Can't win, with the google account, my original Office Outlook pst files have permission issues.

I just put in my account and away we went, it links to my account on my laptop and phone so I assume it's a roaming account. My phone mail app still works for the moment but it's still windows 8.
