A friend of mine home-schools her children.  Unlike most, she home-schools them to keep them away from religion.  She is part of a small group of Atheist home-schoolers, and the children meet for regular field trips to museums, etc., which gives them some socialization.  Most of the mothers/teachers have the minimum of an Education Bachelors, and they seem to be doing a lovely job.

In a group writing assignment, they were asked to provide a Job Posting ad, searching for somebody who exists in current myth (superhero, vampire, witch, Santa, Easter Bunny, etc.) and describe the job we need them to fill.  They had to provide a minimum of 3 tasks needed for the interview, and 3 for the job.   

14-year-old Layna just e-mailed me this.  I think it's pretty fun, and well crafted for a 14-year old.  What do you guys think?     Smile

Job Opening: Deity
Employer:  Earth (3rd planet from Sol, Outer arm, Milky Way Galaxy)
Qualifications: Proficiency in healing, teleportation, psy abilities, omniscience and omnipotence. Applicant must be a dynamic public speaker, as the job is primarily public relations.   Gender, race, species unimportant. 
 
Interview:  the applicant should be prepared to:
1)  Provide proof to the human race regarding the existence or non-existence of a “soul”.  
          1a)  If the soul is proven to exist, provide a clear description of what happens to that entity after human death.
2)  Perform an instantaneous healing.  Test subject will be provided by the search committee.
3)  Demonstrate teleportation skills.
4)  Provide convincing evidence of fairness of judgement and a benevolent nature.
5)  Provide governing bodies of countries with a foolproof means of banishing you from office should you ever behave in any manner that is harmful to humankind.
 
Job Description:
Travel:  public speaking tours.  Publicly bestow health and peace upon caring humans who work to better humanity.  Publicly administer punishment to all corrupt clergy and politicians.  Protect those who are defenseless.  Work occasional miracles.   (Examples:  provide assistance re: drought, famine, disaster, etc.)  Permanently, worldwide, eradicate religious conflict, poverty and hunger, and all types of violent crime.   
 
Salary:  Fame, plus a 1% earnings tithe from every employed human being.
 
Start date:  Immediate

Very nice. Add pre-employment exams, specifically extensive mental status evaluation.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Actually, I posted her job description to also serve as a way to share what she said about the experience.  Even though these themes have been posted hundreds of times already and might be old-hat to you guys.  (If so, please forgive.)

She said that the exercise made her think that her Mom's Atheism is probably correct.  Because "if I actually met whoever got this job, I would be terrified of them".  She said that it doesn't work.  If this Deity ISN'T perfectly pure and benevolent, then the planet is screwed.  If the Deity IS perfectly pure and benevolent, then dealing with us 24/7 might drive it crazy.  It would start getting irritated with our failures.  Then I suggested "and what if having all of our problems solved FOR us gives us nothing to work for?  What if human development is based on overcoming adversity?"

Not bad for 14.  I was a total idiot at 14.  Gives me hope for the human race.  

I'm hoping that some of you guys who are better at making good points for Atheism than I am might be inspired to add to her analysis.  Then I could send them to her.  I'll give you credit and kudos! (Not waffles, that's Neimenovic's thing . . . what about cupcakes?)

That is the sort of thing that Christians often claim in an attempt at excusing god from fixing things in discussions of the problem of evil.

Also, the idea of paying an omnipotent being is rather silly.  If it is omnipotent, it can effortlessly create anything it wants, so it has no need of payment from anyone.

Also, in the qualifications, once the being has omnipotence and omniscience, that already covers the other listed qualifications.  It already knows everything and can do everything.  And with that, it could effortlessly solve all of our problems in the best way.


As an aside, I can meet two of the requirements of the interview.  I will let you think about which two I might mean and leave it a mystery for those unable to figure it out.

Thanks for posting. I totally enjoyed it. I like how people homeschool their kids to keep them away from religion; that’s interesting. There are stories out there, about kids flipping out and telling their stupid teachers that a certain student doesn’t believe in god, then, the student is no longer treated the same.

Also, kudos to the 14 year old. There’s some sound logic in that job ad.

That is brilliant! Extremely thoughtful for 14 Smile I like the way she has noticed the very localised interest of the God.

I think it's pretty clear that whatever slacker god we have, it did not go through this interview process.

I love the way she has phrased it that it must be proficient in omnipotence! Big Grin I suppose more accurately, it must be able to be impressive enough so that most people will say it is omnipotent. Let's face it, it doesn't have to do much to convince people. It doesn't even have to exist!

Love the ad, but an atheist home schooling movement seems odd to me. Usually I am against home schooling g for developmental reasons regarding socialization, and this strikes me especially as in the us state schools are mandated to leave religion out of it.
