I thought angels were humanoids with wings and halos. They're described quite differently in the bible, and having to say "be not afraid" to people was quite justified.

You got it from Zoroastrianism, which believes in guardian angels.  So although you may know nothing at all about Zoroastrianism it's the basis of many of your religious beliefs, even if you aren't religious.
