To spank or not to spank?

RE: To spank or not to spank?
Sure, I agree. It was only a general statement.

What you mention I wouldn't call punishment as such. I would call it a teaching method, and I could understand the idea of causing a small amount of pain to save large amounts later. Children often learn by doing rather than just being told as well I think.

I was talking more about, "You broke the rules, now I'm going to hit you."

My mum told me I got spanked because sometimes I otherwise wouldn't take her seriously. She later told me no spanking went on at all.

If my kids won't stop doing something that will get them hurt,  I'll hurt them myself until they stop.  Stung asscheeks are preferable to severed digits.

It seems that there should be a class on parenting. You just get shoved out the hospital door with your precious bundle and left to get on with it.

I totally agree. I think the general knowledge of parents is atrocious. This is made worse by a kind of arrogance that isn't interesting in anyone else's advice. I'm sure this isn't everyone, but I see it a lot.

Educating parents could help on so many levels. It's just a matter of getting them to put the effort in. They would generally be making lives easier for themselves, in the long run.

Rhythm: I agree with you there, if there is a critical situation where harm is ongoing, it may be necessary to do whatever it takes to remove the danger. Again I see that as different to post-event beatings. There are reasons behind the physicality beyond, "This is what you get."

Yeah, I quietly suspect that people who spank their kids "for not listening" etc....secretly enjoy hitting children.

I jest, I jest.  It's easy to hit things that frustrate us, and children are nothing if not frustrating. Spanking is one of those things where a little goes a -long- way, and if a person finds that they have to spank their children over and over for the same shit - it's obviously not working at all. Haven't reached that point myself -and I think it might be due -at least in part- to the fact that I reserve the spanking for a very limited set of circumstances. It wouldn't terrify and/or pain my children into compliance if they were acclimated to it. I've also found that I have fewer and fewer reasons to spank them, individually, as they get older. Makes me feel like a dirtbag when I'm doing it. So....my kids don't want to get spanked, and I don't want to spank them, most of the time we mash our heads together until better ideas fall out, lol.

(I will slap the shit out a hand after-the-fact, though...in the case of "lets stick shit in this electrical socket". Give em a little taste of what it will feel like, hope they aren't interested in more..it's either that or attempt to explain electricity to a small child.....and then hope that this explanation dissaudes them from sticking more shit in the socket..rather than inspiring them to stick -more- shit in the socket. Seen it go both ways just with my 4.)

I don't like the idea of spanking, but I am no expert and I'm not totally disgusted by the idea of using it on rare occasions.

I agree, it's when it is happening regularly that there is clearly a big problem.

It's just one of the reasons I won't have kids, because I don't want to make such a decision. I have no trouble kicking the shit out of other people's kids just for being kids though Tongue

It infuriates me when I hear the argument, 'Well, my parents spanked me, and it didn't do me any harm.' Seriously?

Of COURSE it did you harm, you stupid fuck...it taught you that's it's OK to hit children!!

Full disclosure: I have never had children and I never will. But my parents had seven, and never struck one of us. Ever.

You have an amazing skill at making any subject about your butt Tongue

If parents are smacking their kids in public, that's a tricky one. At what point can you do anything about it? I mean, if it's excessive and obviously just terrible parenting...

Sadly some people are just dumb as shit. Hitting their kid shuts it up, so they do that.
