AF friends, an opinion on Bible debate, please

Quote:What value do you place upon being able to debate about bible passages?

Roughly akin to Mother Goose tales except they tend to be better written.

Were it not for the shitheads who come here pimping their fucking bible I can honestly say I would never think about the damn thing.

Thank you to EVERYONE who has responded so far.  I wish I could give triple kudos to all of you!

I suppose that if an atheist wants to get into a debate with a theist, a solid knowledge of the bible should be in their tool kit.  Because that's just about all theists will quote as their [superior & infallible!] source.  Unless you get someone like Randy, who likes to pull out theological authors and quote 'em.

==  Which amazes me. Because that's like quoting someone who is writing about old Greek myths . . . as if Hades and Zeus and Hera and crew were looking over his shoulder and making suggestions.

It depends on what the debate (discussion) is about.

If it is about Bible reliability, contradictions, or ridiculous claims, it could be very useful.

But if the debate (discussion) is about the existence of a god, it has zero value.

No need to discuss the Bible until the existence of a god is established.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

In my mind, there's no real debate to be had.
I can listen to all of the Biblical, historical, and philosophical arguments that any theist will present, but in the end it means absolutely nothing.
Because at the crux of any religious belief, is a belief in magic.
Albeit, by a different name....but magic all the same.
And magic ain't real.

To reason with the unreasonable is unreasonable.

I don't argue the bible with Christians. It's a waste of my time and I have better things to do.

For myself I view the bible as an irrelevance;
If it were true it would be redundant, the claims made would be observable in the physical world around us and therefore there would be no need for the text.

I was taught in a Catholic primary school so that may be a hangover from that, insistence on biblical inerrancy certainly seems more a protestant characteristic.

Beyond that; Life's too ****ing short to waste on that BS.

None, because that's what Theists do with their bible and their Jesus.

I think that one of the few passages that has any real value is Proverbs 1:8-19.  Every child should know that one if nothing else.

Suppose mom and dad are assholes?

But I do love these side by side translations. The readings differ so much it is as if each translator has his own version of the language. Which puts the lie to this word of god horseshit.
