 there's no such thing as a mental disorder.

Apparently in this article the phenomena of mental disorders exist but there's no such thing as them because why should they be defined that certain way. What the fuck, if the phenomena exists what the fuck does he expect us to call the phenomena? SOMETHING I would think. Why not mental disorders? Sigh.

Just bothers me when people suggest everything that is wrong with something but produce no better alternatives and the mere absence of an alternative is worse than the 'problem' they are critiquing. Sigh.

BIID actually is a disorder. It's a real disorder and it doesn't have to be associated with transsexuality. I know, probably better than damn near anyone here, that it IS associate with us, but it doesn't have to be. Truth be told, the legitimate medical professionals, most of the ones who actually matter, they'll dismiss that association instantly. They actually understand the difference. If someone legitimately has BIID, I don't hate them, I feel bad for them; the ones I get pissed at are the asshats in the media or in the political arena who don't know the difference between the two.

Why do we notice these stories? Because they're rare and because they're rare, they tend to be sensationalist. If it was something that happened all the time, we wouldn't even notice. This is how the news works.

Truth is, if she decides she wants to blind herself and a trained, licensed medical professional helped her with it, more power to them. I'm willing to bet that a professional who has dedicated years of his life to his field, and knows he can be sued and lose his medical license if something goes wrong, I would think he knows the situation better than I do and cares about the situation enough to resolve it properly. I mean, yeah, it might seem strange to me, but I'm surethere are plenty of people out there who think it's strange to want to have your testicles removed.

I don't think anyone else has raised this point yet,
but if they have, I beg everyone's pardon:

When I initially read this story, elsewhere, it crossed my mind that persons who were born blind or went blind
might find this woman's story infuriating;

but then I remembered a conversation I once overhead in the waiting room at the local hospital:

a woman was angrily venting to her companion about something a doctor had told her.

This lady was blind, apparently as a result of some genetic disorder,
and it seemed that her daughter was now also going blind as a result of the same disorder.

The doctor had been advising her of new treatments
that might prevent her young daughter from losing 100% of her sight.

I couldn't understand why she was so angry;

initially I thought maybe she was selfishly angry because it was too late for her, herself,
to receive the treatment,

but it transpired that, in fact, the woman was angry at what she deemed was the doctor's "bias"
against persons with disabilities;

She was angry in the same way that a pro-LGBT mom
would be angry if a doctor proposed a procedure to "correct" her child's emerging homosexual orientation

She felt that the social stigma of having a disability
was something to be opposed
by militantly embracing the disability
and adopting a kind of "fuck you" attitude to the world:

much as if to say,
I can do everything sighted people can do,
and more,
and so can my kid.

So, I wonder if such a person would hear about this woman blinding herself
and would regard it as "self-improvement".

I'm seriously wondering if you Quill or anyone else actually watched the video posted. The lady has a mental issue and was getting supposed help from her psychiatrist, the psychiatrist is the one who poured the drain cleaner in her eyes, so you tell me who has the greater mental illness. The psychiatrist hasn't been charged with anything as far as I know, so what's up with this, isn't anyone looking out for the welfare of the mentally ill, where is the compassion we're suppose to have for others. Quill I haven't seen it from you, I have seen it from many others though and I thank each one of you. In my opinion the one who needs the greatest help is the one who was suppose to be helping her, not harming her, and that person should be punished for harming someone who is so vulnerable.

The psychiatrist's decision to assist this woman in blinding herself was completely unethical,
but I think everyone is so set back on their heels by the mere fact of the self-maiming
that the shrink's role got lost in the shuffle
