Out of sheer curiosity, I am curious if there are a (relatively) equal number or more male or female atheists? If there is a large disparity, why?

Number of male vs female atheists?

So far the ratio is exactly equal.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Teenaged X-Files obsession + Bermuda Triangle episode + Self-led school research project = Atheist.
Female.
Though I suspect the number of outspoken atheists who are male outnumber the female. Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni: "You did WHAT? With WHO? WHERE???" 
There's a larger number of atheist activists who identify as male. I think that since atheism correlates with intelligence, high education and scientific knowledge, and traditionally those are traits/fields considered masculine and discouraged for women, that might have something to do with the potential lower number of atheist females - Submission is considered a virtue for feminine characteristics, and praying/worshiping fits well with submission.
